well after 9 years the second battery in the barge died...
8.9v is all it is giving (and it sits on a CTEK trickle charger when not out and about)

Its a Yuasa YTX14-BS and to replace it the cheapest I can find is $160 + shipping

Anyone got any ideas about using cheaper GEL type or AGM type no spill batteries for the barge?
(range in price from about $70 to $100) .. or do i go another Yuasa?

Smitty currently have a "Motobat" in my bike has been very reliable for the last 6 yrs still cranks the bike over just like the first day I put it in. Motobats are slighlty smaller but more cranking amps. but i suppose you could get a battery physically the same size as the old lead acid and have tons of crankong power in reserve. At times I have had to park the bike up for 3-4 months and not had a charger attached walk up put the key in push the button and she comes to life without hesitaion.

Fark the Motobat. Fails from one day to the next. I had 3 like that (different bikes, including a barge), in the last year.

SSB do a glass mat battery which is very good.

I must have been lucky or you have been very unlucky it all depends on your perpsective and experience

I got a $100 one from mcas it starts the bike and the bike runs. When I get in my new place and set the garage up I may buy a trickle charger.

Ditto... Had Motobatt in my ZX12 and it failed.
Google Motobatt actually, lots of complaints, the build quality has supposedly gone downhill in recent years.

I've now got an SBB Lithium.

Darn. I bought a Motobatt for the resurrection GPX recently but I haven't got around to fitting it. It is quite a heavy thing so there may be some truth in their claim that they contain more lead than others. At least I only paid wholesale for it.

Motobatt batteries can be very hit'n'miss with quality. One of the local battery suppliers down here, stopped stocking Motobatt because of the number of returns he got.

Having said that - I have a Motobatt in the Black Pearl (1980 Z1000H) - which has been in the there for about 7 years now - and still works fine. Must have gotten a good one - a 1979 MkII came into the workshop a few months ago - it had a brand-new Motobatt fitted less than 12 months ago - and it was 100% rooted.

Lithium batteries are the go - just make sure your charging system (reg/rec) is in perfect condition. Lithium batteries don't like more than 15V.
