ZX6R F1 no spark

Postby Gosling1 » Sun Oct 09, 2016 9:27 pm

OK this might seem a bit odd - but I cannot get any spark at all out of the ZX6R F1 that is in the shed.

this bike has come to me in a lot of pieces, they were scattered all over ACT and down to Cooma. Thanks to Swabio I got a good frame - the motor has turned out to be a G model motor - but all the rest of the running gear - is F model.

No ignition switch, so I have just rigged up a kill-switch which joins the 3 main wires needed for ignition - brown, white and grey - from the white connector block under the tank. This gave me dash lights :)

Joined the 2 wires for the sidestand cut-out, and earthed the clutch lock-out - so the starter motor spins up just fine :)

Problem is - nil spark at the plugs. Nothing. Dead as a dodo.

Have tried 3 ignition units including 1 known good unit from Charlie's ZX6R. No spark.

Have tested the pulser coil - resistance figure is right in the middle of the range.

Have charged battery punching out 12.5 volts while cranking the motor.

Ignition coil resistance figures have all checked out OK. Leads are good. Plug caps are good.

I am fucked if I can track down this problem - these bikes are pretty simple battery/coil ignition systems and I don't think there is any real difference between the F and G model pulse coils - same part no. on CSMNL.

Anybody got any tips? I know its been a few years since punters raced these or had them as track-day bikes - but is there something simple with the electrical system that I might have overlooked??

cheers in advance :D

I know stuff all about ignition systems the only things I can think of is tracing the 12v along it's path to the coil and see where it stops, and try bringing a wire direct from the battery to the spark plug to make sure you've got return path.... Grain of salt

I believe there is a resistor in the barrel, my 99 zx9r trackie I wanted to bypass ignition barrel as I lost the key for it but it would show ignition lights and crank but no spark. I was told you need to add a 100ohm resistor to the grey wire which the cdi senses as anti theft for hot wiring. But I never got around to getting a resistor just got a new key cut for the barrel.

Something like this with a 100ohm half watt resistor

Paul is spot on, I had the same issue with my ZXR when converting it to a 'Race Loom'

The CDI unit needs to see a signal of around 0.7V (don't quote me on the exact figure) when the ignition key is turned so it knows the ignition circuit has been switched on with the key & not hotwired. If that signal doesn't happen, the CDI will not switch on the ignition circuit.

Plug the standard ignition barrel back in & it'll fire right up,

Plus a ZX7 & a few ZXR Ls & ZX9 Bs & Cs in various stages of completion.

thanks heaps guys :kuda: - this now makes a lot more sense of the loose papers which were in the Clymer manual for this bike that Swabio gave me. There were 2 hand-drawn wiring diagrams, both of them mentioned a 100ohm resistor in the grey wire - I had NFI what this was about. Now I can see why this has been added.....

Rob - the bike came to me in parts only - the frame was sourced from Swabio (ex-Kevin Curtain spare) - engine and some bits from the ACT and a lot of the rest (bodywork and ancilleries) from another bloke in the ACT who is converting his ZX6 to an electric bike - one thing which was not included in any of the boxes - is an ignition barrel and key

OK off to Jaycar tomorrow for a 5W 100ohm ceramic resistor !! That should get things moving along nicely :kuda: :kuda:

good news - thanks for the help with this one guys, the little shitter farted and coughed then ran tonight ! very happy camper. Still a lot of work to do, but hearing the engine run - and sound pretty good - is a hell of a good incentive.

May need to pick some ZX6R experts brains about the fuel system down the track.......but at least this baby is firing on all 4 now :kuda:
