Carb help. Zxr750 j1

Please help.
Today I finally managed to get one of my pilot jets out that has been stuck for ages.
But now all the carb is cleaned out and should be fine. It either revs like no tomorrow or stalls.
The chap who had it before me ran it at 2.5 turns out ok pilot screw. I've tried from 1.5 to 3 with not much difference.
Please help. At the end of my tether with it.

Air leak on the carb boots?
There isn't a seal on the pilot screw that got lost when you cleaned the carbs was there? I've had that trouble with dirt bike carbs before.

There weren't any at all on any of the screws... I did say that when we were doing it... But but was working before.... It was being a pain but not like this?
