ZX12R Spark Plugs

Postby billwest » Fri Nov 21, 2014 6:16 pm

What a kaarnt of a job to get those farkers out!

Had to remove both left and right fairing panels, tank cover, air ducts, rubber cover, loosen plastic baffle and grow small hands.
Putting it all back should be just as much fun. Worth leaving the plastic off?

Changing the plugs over (to iridium CR9EIA-9) because I get rough idle and very jerky acceleration below 2000rpm, in any gear. Above that is ok.
All this happened in the last week, all of a sudden.

yeh we all have had the pain of changing plugs in a ZX12R before - and what a nightmare it is   I put everything back together after fitting the iridiums, because they last so long.......

You may need to have the injectors cleaned - check the fuel pump as well, sometimes they go without warning......and if you still have issues, use the fault-code wire in the harness - up near the boot under the pillion seat (its a yellow wire with a female connector) - and check to see if there are any fault codes stored in the ECU.

Mmm... ZZR1100 is similar - airbox off.

I'm due to do it again, and improve the she-be-right carb-balance half-job I did.

Fuel pump, injectors - I should hope not. This bike only has 13,000 km on the clock.

only 13k ? what year is it ? that is a pretty low mileage ....you need to check the fault codes to isolate the problem.

2006. Bought it last March off a bloke who couldn't ride it, due to carpal tunnel syndrome. He bought a Hardly instead. The 12 had 6500km on the clock then.

New plugs in, starts right up.
No error codes - the LED doesn't flash at all when the (orange) wire is grounded.

The job wasn't too bad after all, now that I have the hang of it. It will be a lot easier next time.

I need to take it for a ride later today, and see if the problem has disappeared. I did notice #3 old plug was dirtier than the rest.

Problem gone. New plugs made all the difference.
It actually runs a lot smoother too.
It still had the original plugs from 8 years ago.

Iridium NGK CR9EIA-9 ($19 each) - these are recommended for the ZX14R. Supposedly better made than the CR9EIX ($20 each).

hmm OK - thanks for the tip. I put new plugs in the Barge a couple of years ago, so might look to replace them with the 9EIA versions when they need replacing
