zx7/zx9 engine differences?

Postby sparker » Mon Aug 01, 2011 2:02 pm

Hi,

I am putting together a racebike which has been built around a 96-03 ZX7 engine. From what I have seen on the web, it appears that the zx9 engine from the same era would also fit (only the exhaust flanges are a little different which is ok if you have an aftermarket exhaust, which I obviously do).

Is this correct? Are there any other differences I should be aware of?

Appreciate you information.
Regards,
Sam

This appears to be for the pre-96 zx7 is that correct? I was thinking of the 96-2003 zx7 engines, if they are the same mounts as any year zx9 engine?

My apologies, just came by this:

As I will be running a different ignition, carbs and cooling system, I think this should work very easily.

Thanks,

He Sam,

I have a 2002 ZX7R, and a couple of years back did the ZX9R engine swap.

The front engine mounts need to be moved - i purchased a kit from the states which included mounts which utilized the existing mounts. Without them the front mounts need to be ground off the frame, and new ones welded in place.

Also, the oil pipe on the side of the ZX9R head needs modifications to clear the frame. And the air box needs to be modified to fit the carbs.

.....................

I just looked at the link above, and that is the same kit i purchased for my bike - BRG racing. IIRC it took the guy around 12months to finally make the kit, but otherwise he was great to deal with.

Exhaust wise, aftermarket ZX7R headers / pipes are fine.

Travis.
