ZX2R cant start

Postby ZX2R_BOY » Mon May 23, 2011 4:15 pm

Hey guys my ZX250R WONT START :( its a 1989 model. Ive never had the problem before.
What happens..
I just cant seem to start the bike, battery is 100% (always kept charged) the bike is used nearly every weekend and the fuel is always premium... It started a week ago for a few mins but then died when I took the choke off... Couldnt start it after that. So I didnt really think anything of it. Tried starting it today and it wont kick over. Like I said nothing has changed other than Sydneys weather being colder then it has been in the past 6months... Could the temp be a problem?

Do these bikes need a different tune in winter?
Any advice or answers would be appreciated!

mine use to starve for fuel after not being started for a week. try clutching it a few times to get the fuel into the motor, use to work for mine. see if that works

I know the C model has the side stand sensor and neutral sensor. You can start it in gear if the clutch is in, probably like most bikes. Not sure if the A model is the same though. I know mine never used to like starting/running in the cold until the engine got nice and warm. I think I used to have my idle set around 1500rpm and it would run fine, any lower than that and it would stall and be difficult, especially in the cold. That and rusty fuel were my biggest problems :D
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle.

Yea ive heard some bad stories about rust in the fuel tank and petrol getting old and sludgy... Mine looks pretty neat in the tank so hopefully no problems there. And mine idles at about 2000rpm when cold and usually drops abit more when hot. I just adjusted idle, only time will tell if it helps for next start up :)

Hey mate,

I know this is a little late, but I've been doing some serious work on my bike right now, and know for a fact that these bikes have compression problems, which is pretty damn straight forward for a 22 year old bike, I have an '89 myself and am suffering from slightly lower compression in cylinder 4, apparently due to 2 valves that were out of spec, however my sneaking suspicion is that the 'rings will go soon too, and these will mean a rebuild. The symptoms you're describing are very similar to low compression, I'd take that bike to a mechanic straight away because there's usually not much point in throwing money at an engine like that anymore...
