The ZXR is being a bit of a prick to start lately when cold. When you pull the choke on it wants to go but it stalls soon after. If i pull it on all the way on and start it up it revs its nuts off which cant be good on cold start up,,if you back it off slightly it stalls.Eventually it will run and once its running goes like stink.Probably those pesky carbs but any input would be a great help.Gav.

Whats the fuel like? New, from a good servo?
They all rev like a shitter for a while when chokes on full, i guess when you think of the ratio a car might rev at 2000 when cold starting but they redline at 6500.
If your bike revs at 4000 when on full choke but redlines at 13000 then the piston velocity is probably roughly the same. Just seems like its squeeling..

I have been having the same problem with my 89 ZXR 250. It starts easy once its been ridden. But now it wont start at all. Has a strong smell of petrol and backfires loudly through the exhaust
