ZXR750L rear shock

The rear shock on my zxr is getting a bit sad so its time for a rebuild. Now before i go down the rebuild my old shock road i was hoping to find out if there was a different shock that i could replace the original one with that has compression/rebound and preload adjustment. Not the four clicks of rebound that i have at the moment. thanks in advance.

I did some thinking today and came up with the possibility of using a rear shock out of a b model ZX9. Can anyone tell me if these will fit the ZXR without to much trouble and also the length of a zx9 shocker

Yep, there is Dunno about a B model shock - doubt it would be that much different - without a good seeing too by a suspension guru - even with 3 way damping. Consider the cost there and the cost to puchase said "B" model shock before you dismiss other - seeming more expensive - options

ZX7 shock has the same length & all the adjustability you want but the reservoir will foul your battery box or undertail plastics, not a problem for an experienced motorcycle modifier like yourself.
Might even be a good excuse to stick a new tail on it.

Thanks Darren but i was trying to avoid having to moving the battery but if that's what it takes then so be it. I did some more thinking today and now i'm looking at a set of zx6 wheels just to be different. From what i can work out the rear uses a 180/55 tyre the same as the zxr so they should fit with the right spacers made up to suite. Like i said just a thought

I've taken measurements of ZXR (swept spoke) & ZX9C (straight spoke, same as the ZX6) in the past & from memory 1 fits exactly (don't rember whether it was the front or the rear) & the other only needs 1 spacer.
The BIG bonus is that the straight spokers are quite a bit lighter than the swept & we all know the best place to lose weight on a motorcycle is the wheels.
I've got a spare mint ZX7 shock too (if the one on H's bike is OK - I think it is)
Phone is offline for a while - I'm actually enjoying not being contactable !!

Yes lighter is always better But i was thinking of some off a later model about 07 onwards or whenever they changed to the current design.
as for the shock i may have to releave you of it for a few weeks to see how it fits

I'm considering a P model shock in my L, and noted the battery box issue. What's the easiest way of getting around this?

I'm thinking of maybe relocating the battery and dremelling out the undertray box bit, but I like destroying things.

Would the P model subframe and tail bolt on to the L frame?

G'day Tom im still at the thinking stage myself as to were to put the battery .I was thinking about maybe mounting it above the gearbox but will have to do some measuring to see if this is viable. As for the P model sub frame i would have to see an L and a P side by side and take some more measurements. but just off the top of my head i reckon that they would be fairly close

whilst where on the topic, would a rear shock from a C2 model zx9r fit into a 98 zx7r?
i may have an ohlins rear shock in my possession soon and im interested if i could put it on the trackbike.

I don't know if the battery would like getting heated up all that much...

If I had to retain the ZXR subframe and undertray, I'd probably cut out the battery box and put a sealed battery on its side in the underseat compartment. But as mentioned, it's a pretty good excuse to do a tail transplant

Found this interesting tidbit online:-

As for the [05] 10r shock all you need is a 12mm drill bit to open the mounting holes up a bit and file 2mm off the inside of the bottom mount! Takes around 20mins to make the shock right to slot in the zxr and is straight forward to do!

Posted in the context of a J model shock upgrade, but I'm led to believe that all the shocks are interchangeable J-L-P.
