zxr250 leaking oil

Mon Apr 05, 2010 11:42 pm

Hi guys,
my recently purchased zxr250, i have noticed it leaks roughly about 1 drop every 2 days of oil from this location, i have uploaded 2 pics to aid. Want to know if its just the oil seal thats possibly degraded, and if its an easy fix? It looks like the shaft that goes into the motor to change gears.

thanks in advanced

Oil seal has gone, I think this sort can be replaced easy enough with the gear linkage removed, just mark where the outer clamp is sitting on the shaft, I usually use a hole punch to mark the gap, that way when you replace the gear you don't have to fiddle with adjustment. There might already be a marker on the shaft if so go off the position of that. I once had a clutch pushrod seal go & it was similar to this .... just had to dig out the old one & slip in the new one, Check with a mechanic or where you are buying the spares to make sure you can do it yourself ;)

having done this myself, id reccommend taking it to a mechanic
lolz unless your good with your hand and tools,,

to do this you have to drain oil and coolant. remove the water pump, oil pump, clutch and oil pump drive shaft.

its a fairly big process for such a small job, i had to do it though as it wouldnt pass scruitineering for racing with it leaking oil like that.

all up it should take a compotent mechanic about 2-3hrs. so at $70 p/h (i think thats the rate) $210 for labour, then you add on consumables, oil, coolant, and gaskets. youd be looking at a $400 bill id say.

:) :)
cheers

It's reasons like these i started learning how to DIY as much of bike repair as i could.
You'll likely have to remove the plastic (obviously) and drain the coolant so that you can take the water pump off to get sufficient access to take the side plate off the engine. Once you do that it'll be easy to take off the side plate. there should be further seals on the inside of that between the crankcase and the side plate. That may be shot (i've had a similar thing happen with my hydraulic clutch actuator seal on my RF), but you may be able to get away with just changing the seal on the outside plate alone.

Thanks for the replies lads, im good with my hands and good with tools (have plenty off aswell), but your post timmy almost scared me, but I think i'll give it a go when i have say a whole weekend free as I don't exactly have that kind of money laying around (uni student  ). I ordered the oil seal which should arrive on friday. How long do you estimate it will take an amatuer? The bike needs a service soon anyways so it almost works well. I hope no more oil seals are shot mike cause then it will be more waiting on the parts to fly in from japland.

I'd set aside a morning to do it. If you have extra time afterwards, then take it out for a ride!
