Parts are expensive heh ?? ......

Postby Gosling1 » Sat Feb 27, 2010 7:10 pm

 like that is news.....

anyway, as part of the re-build of the MFP12 into the ZX12R-R, I have started a list of required bits'n'pieces.......and yes, OEM stuff is through the roof....

But its a necessary evil, well it is to get the OEM parts prices anyway, as these provide a baseline for *everything* else out there....

When I get the prices back on Monday, will post the list of required bits, and all the OEM prices in this thread. I have already had some good responses from a couple of wreckers using Findapart.

For those who may not know how Findapart works - just fill in the blanks on the front page, and they do the rest. Emails are sent to every bike wrecking yard that is on the network ( ie all the ones that matter, and who will probably have what you need).

When you get a response from each wrecker using Findapart, it includes the price.

Next step in the long process - is set up an Aussie ebay search for your model - in my case its the MFP12 (2005 ZX12R). This sends an email to you every day when new items are listed......not always what you are looking for, but sometimes the odd bargain pops up.....

Last step - repeat the above process using US ebay. The ZX12R in this example, was a huge seller in the US, so there is a farking shitload of spares for sale all the time there.......eventually, if you get no luck with wreckers or ebay here, then you could expect to get everything you need from US ebay......

I will update this thread with all the stuff that is bought, any shithead dealings with wreckers or ebay scammers, and all the costs......it will be a bit of a rolling commentary on the rebuild........to kick it off, here is a picture of a paint scheme that is currently doing laps in my tiny mind......

I reckon the old girl will look sweet, especially with ZX12-RR on the side !!!

Looking forward to following this thread - will be even better to see the end results :D

Nice info on the ebay searches as well - wasn't aware of this.

Cool Gos I'll be watching.

Ebay in the US is definately impressive for the availability and prices of parts.

have found in particular the US has heaps of parts for the 12! Over here a couple of wreckers wanted 180 for a front master cylinder - $90 from the US!

SHame its harder to get an exhaust

OK - got some prices back from Kawasaki for the first bunch of bits'n'pieces.....

$51.47 - OEM Water pipe ( the small pipe that runs between the lower radiator outlet and water pump on l/h side. Its about 30mm dia and 150mm long...its a piece of pipe.

No other quotes received as yet for this piece - I think I *might* just use a short length of vacumn cleaner pipe !! Cheap, cheerful and effective...

$100.42 - OEM Radiator coolant tank.

$35 from Keith at Victorian M/C wreckers.... (I have used these guys in the past, fast postage, items as described - recommended, a tad pricier than others though)
$25 from Kawi King (old mate down the south coast. Ticks the right box !)

$81.06 - OEM L/H handlebar. Bare handlebar...

$45 from Keith

$206.02 - OEM Left-hand switchblock.

$85 from Keith
$50 from Kawi King.

$641.17 - OEM fairing & instrument bracket. (The really big mother bolted to the steering head....)

No other quotes on this one yet - I think this will end up being a custom 4th Dimension tube-steel version....especially if I end up using a Vaypor dash....

$283.34 - OEM L/h mirror assembly !

So far the cheapest one of these on US ebay has been about $20US ......looking good.

$319.19 OEM alternator cover.

No local quotes yet supplied for this bit, but there is an excellent bling version available in the US in black, about $130US. This will do the job.

$86.44 - OEM cam-cover gasket.

What a horses arse !! Nearly 90bucks for a bloody rubber gasket !!! I will post up a photo of the *really* weird damage to the current one on the bike, but it has to be replaced, and this is one of the few bits where I have little choice other than to run with an OEM part.....

$245.34 - OEM Throttle Position Sensor.

$100 from Keith.

This is a bit of an odd one. The primary TPS is still 100% good and working, the TPS that is busted reads the secondary flies - and I have removed these a few years ago......so am in 2 minds about wether or not this bit actually does need to be replaced ?? I need to do some more digging around the US forums and find out if I can just live without it, and just bridge the terminals correctly so that the FI light is not on all the time..... ;)

Thats it so far, and grand total for OEM stuff has already hit $2014.70. Ouch. That hurts more than hitting the deck at Mach 6 !!

Astute punters will have already noticed the total lack of bodywork in the above quote.......  - good reason for that, no OEM stuff will be purchased.

The remaining good bodywork went over to the repair shop today, we had a long hard look at all the bits, worked out what was good to be used (front guard, r/h fairing lower panel and rear tailpiece) and what was not (tank cover and rear seat cowl - those bits will be sourced from US ebay - the tank cover comes in around $50US, not sure about the rear cowl yet, maybe $20US ??)

If anyone has had a look at the green/black paint scheme on the 2010 Ninja 250, this is basically the same colours that are being used for the respray.

Onwards ever onward....... :kuda:

When I was looking for one for the tracky (9) Cover less than half price as well but don't forget the gasket if needed...the gasket from the US was also much cheaper than local $10 v >$30

Wait till you see the photos mate !! Phil called it for a write-off almost immediately.....and it did look *really* bad lying down in the creek-bed.....

Black Pearl ?? Maybe I might just do that, do the black bits in the OEM black, with the sparkly fleck.......plenty of time to think about options....

Heh I did forget to mention one other important thing......while the bodywork is getting done, I really don't want to waste the 3 months rego I bunged on prior to the CDT trip......so will be repairing the original alternator cover so that it does not weep oil, and install the replacement coolant tank and radiator pipe, so I can still ride the bugger....

This does mean of course, that a certain element of Wasteland Streetfighter will be necessary, I mean really, what other choice do I have ??

Have been working on the checkerplate engine-covers since lunchtime......

It probably would mate - the parts guy at the dealership reckons that the switchblocks are common amongst all late-model kwakkas, and have been for a few years - Can ya take a photo of it, and the plug at the end ?? If its the same, happy to swing you some $$ for it , no problemo !
