ZXR Reliability?

Postby rooster89 » Fri Dec 11, 2009 8:04 pm

Hey everyone. Im looking at upgrading my bike pretty soon from my current zzr250. I have seen a few well priced older zxr model bikes and was wondering if there are any years or models to stay away from? And are there any models that should be snapped up if available? Im also considering the larger zzr models. How are the zxr different?

Thanks.

ZXR are sports/race ZZR are sports tourer.

If your talking ZXR750, go the L series (93-95) they are a very nice bike indeed. Bulletproof motors on the whole range though.
Rear suspension on the pre L series is supposed to be hard as fark, but i have only ridden one and i didnt think it was quite as bad as people say.

The L model I had was pretty tasty & had no problems............ till Paddo got his hands on it
Seriously they are a great bike just try & get a clean one with a service history.

Thanks for the info. Are the fairings prone to stress cracking or only as much as any other bike? And do they handle high kms if looked after ie. regular oil changes, filter changes, relatively easy riding etc. ??

MOst ZXr's have high Kms now. Mine has over 82,000kms and still goes great. I have had it for about five years and only had to change the fuel pump as well as chains, tyres etc.
There is one for sale at Motorcycle disposals in Seven Hills with low Km's

I just bought a ZX6RR 2003 from Melbourne and I reckon it is a great bike, have done just over 2000kms on it (now has close to 14k on the clock). I did have to replace the regulator but apart from that it is good. Appears to run warm but have been told it is running normal.

MY '91 ZXR750 clicked over 3000km on its second lap on Tuesday and it still pulls like a train.

I've had it on a dyno pumping out > 90rwhp with just a Yoshi slip on. Valve clearances were still pretty good, but I'm buggered if I know when they were adjusted last.

The only problem I've had with it has been the clutch rod wearing and/or breaking, I think I'll have to go buy my second one of these since I've had it soon, might get one milled up out of stainless if it's going to keep wearing all the time...

Have you got the end cap on it, Tony ? There's a steel cup that sits over the slave cylinder end. I've never had any problems with clutch pushrods.

Cheers,
Brian
