zx2r as a first bike...??

Hi Guys,

Hoping that you can help me out here...

I'm looking at buying my first bike, and have my eye on a '91 zx2r C that I had a look at over the weekend.

So basically, just wanting to know any pros or cons for this model, and any other extra info that a newbie to the biking world would find handy.

Hey Bel

I have a ZXR250C !!! its a great bike when everything is going smoothly...But make sure you find a good one unless you are very hands on and prepare to do some of the dirty work !

Pros
1) Faster than the ZZR250 GPX250 NINJA250 etc
2) Sounds better IMO
3) Great bike if you are not very tall or if you like a smaller bike that you can wrestle around.
4) Inline 4 cylinder way better than the twins and 2 cylinders IMO
5) So much cheaper now that the NINJA 250s have flooded the market, at least you will be different to everyone else!

Cons
1)I am pretty tall and after a long trip i'm all beat up and feel cramped.
2) They are a old bike so you may have some(or many) issues, make sure you get some1 who knows whats going on to check it out.
3)Parts may be hard to get as they are imports, unless you buy a AUS delivered one even then i think its still hard to get.
4) U-turns and obstacle course may be a hassle for your P's, i recommend you rent a Yamaha Scorpion! it'll make the day SUPER easy!

Pro's > than Cons I've had mine for a year and a bit the major problem with mine was that it did not have the correct needles size fitted therefore the bike kept running really rich and would seize and not start up after 30min or so riding. So MAKE SURE YOU GET SOMEONE TO CHECK THE WHOLE BIKE OUT!!!! Besides that the bike is super dooper!!

Is the bike advertised online? If so post up some links, and if not let us know everything you know about it.

Myself and a mate (who knows bikes) checked it out the other day - everything looks pretty good considering the age, and has had most of the working bits (brakes, discs etc) replaced recent-ish (sorry don't know the technical jargon just yet!) my mate took it for a ride and said that it ran really well - we had checked out a number of bikes over the w'end and this was the pick of the bunch in terms of condition and value for money (in not needing to replace annything in the near future).

my main concern, as stated above, is the getting the parts if anything goes wrong - everything else just seems so right, and cos i am a shortie i can sit on it with no worries touching the ground - and my fave colour is green so thats def a bonus!!

so is it go with the heart (and get it) or the head (and the maybes about the possible costs if something does go wrong)

$4 thou is alot for that bike, see if you can talk them down. $2500 to $3000 would be more suitable.

Other costs to consider and negotiate on:
1. When is rego due, $500 to $800 cost dependant on your circumstances and green slip costs.
2. tyres, are they OK, they are about $300 to $400 a set
3. when is service due, has it been serviced. This is a minimum $500 jobbie if it needs doing, Id say it would.
4. Chain and sprockets, are these needed? $250 to $300 cost if required.

Work all these into the cost of the bike.

Time has come to sell my ninja. 1991 ZXR 250C in Ninja Green. Serviced in January (chain, sprocket,spark plugs discs and brakes), Oil changed, new filter just last month along with battery. Tyres still have 70% wear left. Never skips a beat and starts first time every time. Registered until Jan 2010 Never been dropped or fallen off, always garaged since purchased Great bike to learn on and feels like a larger bike (thats why i chose it) Unfortunately it has to go as i am going overseas.

yes, what people write on the internet and actually do is totally different sometimes..jut like the knob head selling the 7r that reckons he changes the oil every 2,000k's.. check these things out with your own eyes before you go ahead.

especially check to make sure she' runs nice and revs out properly, carbie re-builds would maybe be req'd with a bike this age..

Hi Bel, welcome to KSRC, to be honest stay away from the over priced "grey imports" ... they all are imports as the ZXR250 was never bought into the country as a domestic model. Parts are a problem for sure & the big one is they are more than lightly thrashed.
You would be far better off with a ZZR or GPX

Looks like it's in good nick. However $4000 is too much for a bike of that age. If you could get it for around $3000 I would say that would be a good purchase.
