Postby devo » Sun Aug 16, 2009 4:13 pm

Anyone on here running a 180 tyre on the rear on thier ZX6R 95-97 , how much room have you got ? do they fit good
I'm running a 165 rear slick but they are harder to get so seen as how there a lots of 180's about me thinks this may be an option. ;)

Yes - I'll also be interested to know if anyone is running a 180 on this model. Currently running 160 Pirrelli slick but would be interested to hear what people experiences with 180's have been :D

from what ive heard you can run a 170 but the 180 is just too big. There isnt enough room and starts to hit the chain and swingarm sides.

I think the j series has a wider swingarm and could fit one in. Correct me if im wrong

Yeah the J has a 180 as standard... Tho this won't help devo cos of PCRA regs... A G madel swingarm would also allow for a wider section rear tyre... Not sure of the ease of fitment however... HTH

OK, I raced one of these when they were new. We (Bayliss, Curtain, and just about every A grader riding a ZX6) tried 160's, 170's and 180's. The 160 turns much better and we used it at the tighter tracks like Broadford and Winton (Old Cicuit). The 170's we used for faster tracks like PI and EC. But a 180 is a waste of time. Not because it hits the swingarm or chain either. A 180 pulls too tightly around the rim and causes the edge of the tyre to be at the wrong angle to provide side grip. We found the 180 would just let go when pressing on. I still run 160's on mine as they work great and steer nicely. 170's are very hard to get in race rubber now. FWIW, I run a Bridgestone BT090 on mine. They are made for a 400, but they work really well. (Gotta run them at about 26 Psi cold though). I can still hang a 62 around Broadford with a BT090 on the back, so nothing wrong with the grip levels. (Currently the A grade Supersport guys are running high 57's or low 58's at Broadford)

Not to worried about the PCRA regs Mate that Mod would pass .
Thanks for the input Strika ;) I was only thinking this for better availability in rubber. What are the BT090's like in the wet.
I do have a spare set of wheels for wets ( which I haven't purchased yet ) till it actually rains then I will get them
I haven't run at Broadford yet. But who knows one day maybe :D

It's not the swingarm which causes the issue Pinchy. It's the rim width. :)

well they look like this...

Image

so better than a slick  there is some tread on the edge...

recent discussion came up about what tyres to use for wets on a track bike (i know this is not racing) and where we got to was Pilot Road 2...

Image

lots of tread but with a soft side compound
