Building a zx7r

Hey Guys

Just wondering if anyone out there could give me some advice. I'm thinking about building a 96+ zx7r and need to put together some sort of budget.

So I think the actual bike will cost around the 4 to 5 mark and hopefully once I find one it will be in fairly good condition.
So this is what I want to do.
- Pull it to pieces and clean everything. I can do this
- rebuild the engine/carbs. I think I would get someone to do this for me what do you think it would cost??
- rebuild the suspension. Again someone to do this for me.
- Brakes, I think I could do them.
- Repaint the frame
- Repaint the bodywork
- Repaint the wheels and do the bearings new tires
- New seats/recover
- Put it all back together and have it tuned
- HIDs, LED blinkers/rear light, new instruments maybe these?? http://www.kosonorthamerica.com/ we'll see they are really $$$$
- New Exhaust system
- Also I live in Sydney so if anyone knows of a good bike for sale or a good mechanic that would be ace. I'm not far from Flywheels are they OK??

I want to do as much as I can but I have never built a bike before so it will be limited to what I can do.
That's alot didn't think it was until I wrote it down, maybe I should just buy a new bike

In all seriousness Terry you should think about buying a new bike unless there's a reason you *really* want a better-than-showroom-condition 12 year old bike. Off the top of my head I reckon you'd be looking at:

Bike - $4k+
Rebuild engine - $2k
Rebuild suspension - $1k
Brakes $200 (in parts)
Paint job on frame, body & rims - $2k+ professionally, cheaper if done at home, etc
New tyres - $500 (but not really a consideration)
Seats - $200 minimum
Tune-up - $200
Bling - the sky is the limit
Exhaust - $1k

That's already over $11k for a bike that will still be worth $6-7k tops. Now I love the zx7r's and would buy one if I had space for it, hell I'd even tart it up a bit, but the sort of things you're thinking about a big $$ unless you can do heaps of the work yourself.

Maybe just buy a neat one and ride it for a while, you might be happy with it as is

except an engine rebuild...inc new cams valves rebuilt carbs is going to be more than $2 large...imho
you could easily spend $5k by the time you also add a new exhaust
then also add a g/box rebuild + new chain and sprockets.....
close to $15 all up

It's a world of financial pain...

...but if you're going to do a lot of the grunt work yourself, take your time over a lengthy period AND plan to keep the bike for many many years then go for it.

At the very least you've kept another Kawasaki on the road for many a good year, itself a worthy endeavour. At the most you might end up with something that the guys in the Ulysses Club will drool over when you turn 40 and you'll still be riding it when you hit full membership 10 years later.

Wouldn't mind doing much the same myself, so goodonya.

However, if you're doing it as an investment or in any way hope to recoup your outlay you're sure to be disappointed...

Thanks for the advice guys, I know it's a stupid thing to do finically. I've done it before with a car, but the money isn't the main driving force over fixing a car or bike up over a period of time. Anyway I'm still tossing around the idea I just need to convince my brother in law that his garage, me and a bike in bits are a good idea. I think we can do alot of it ourselves and the expensive things would come over time so in a couple of years it is finished. So long as I find a decent one to start with my plan can start.
