ZX7R Fuel Consumption .....

Postby Kwakka Kilt » Fri Apr 10, 2009 2:17 pm

Allo 8)

My ZX7R ran out of fuel at 114 kms on the trip meter, before I had a chance to switch to reserve it died.....

I then tried to start the bike with the reserve switched over, but all I got was a flat battery :(

I have 2 questions for you knowledgeable dudes ....

1) If the ZX7R has a tank capacity of 19 litres, 2 litres being the reserve, that means I have 17 litres to play with right ??

If I calculate 114 kms at 17 litres I get ...... 6.7 kms per litre, is this right ??!! (I can't find consistent fuel consumption figures on the Internet)

2) If I find I am running out of juice, I would have to switch to reserve as the bike is running ?? There is no way the bike will restart after switching to Reserve without flattening the battery ??

114kms out of 17 litres is mad, as I used to get around at least 280kms out of a 650cc VTwin bike with a Jet Kit fitted (Around 16kms per litre), doing the same commute with the same riding style

Cheers ......

i can tell you i think you should be getting more than 114kms out of a tank easily. I've found my zx7r can get about 230kms town riding (not counting reserve) but would get way more out on the open cruising at 110kph. The lowest i had was 180km out of a tank but i'm sure it was because i didn't fill it right up, and had nothing to do with the fact that i was wringing its neck!! ;)

+1.

230 - 190 to a tank is normal depending on how hard you're riding. Your fuel consumption is crazy. What does your exhaust look like? Any mods to the carbs?Check your fuel lines for leaks?

Yeah somethings not right there, somewhere around the 200+ mark for normal riding. 114k's is about what I get when on the redline constantly. You can definitely restart the bike on reserve if its run out without flattening the battery, but it can take a lot of attempts, maybe your battery wasn't the best? Easiest is to switch over as you start to hear/feel the bike struggling

OK guys, thx for that 8)

Yup, I thought things were errm, not quite right ....

The exhaust pipe looks OK, it's a Laser carbon pipe, has the usual black soot, could be a bit rich, but on idle with a hot motor, I am not getting "popping", unburnt fuel in the headers.

I haven't stripped the fairings down and taken a look to see if there are any pollution gear mods, filter swapouts etc, if that is the case then I would suspect larger main jets possibly being fitted, but still that still would'nt drink the juice that quickly...

Let's see what I can dig up when I take her clothes off !!
