'94 ZX9R forks to '93 ZXR750

Postby short n fat » Mon Oct 01, 2007 6:55 pm

The title is pretty self explanitary ( but not always my spelling :D ).
Would they fit??
My fork tubes are fairly pitted and one leg has started leaking again after recently replacing the fork seals.
Any advice greatly appreciated
Thanks and regards
Simon

Interesting question... don't know anyone who has done it.
I can't see why not, I believe they are both 52mm diameter.
I think they have a compression adjuster too, which the L doesn't have.?
The other things to check are length, the caliper mounts and axle diameters as you may need the whole front end to get it to work..

while looking into options for fork replacements for my bike, i ran into a little write up from a bloke who had stuck 9 forks on a 750. it was too many beers ago for me to remember models but they did fit up excepting the length, he ended up with a good inch or more of extra fork hanging over the top but they did work for him. useless to a zx7r because the upper tubes are wider at the mount but i beleive (as madkaw pointed out) that the earlier models use straight uppers and were the same width. worth a look anyways if you can get them cheaper...

Yes, your wrong..
The 94 to 97 zx9r had upside forks, they went back to conventional forks on the 98 + models.

Thanks for the info guys.
As far as I can find out they ran the same disc size and same calipers so that should be right.
99coconuts - that sounds about right with the extra inch or so sticking up because I think the 9R's had their clip ons mounted above the top yolk.
I think I'll run the risk and get them. I haven't had much luck finding ZXR750 ones and if worst comes to worst and they don't fit, I suppose I can buy a 9R to put them on
Thanks and regards

A cheaper solution would be to put new bushes in the current forks and have the legs re-chromed to spec.

Stop being so sensible Strika, I get enough of that from the missus ;) :D

Yeah, the rechrome is plan B. Nearest place is Brisbane (1700km away). I'd rather just swap on some new legs than have the bike hanging up in the shed for several weeks but will see what happens.
Vic bike wreckers have a "great" set (ZXR750) for $900.00  That's getting close to how much I paid for the bike :D

Thanks for all the input guys

Hopefully it'd be a fair bit more than an inch... the extra length will be from the ZXR750 mounting the clipons below the top triple clamp, while the B-model Nine mounts them above.

Option C for the OP would be to replace just the fork lowers... though, admittedly, that's unlikely to be that much cheaper... if the inner tube survives a stack, so does the rest of the forkleg... and IK Labs doesn't count a set in its inventory, sadly.

Which reminds me... you get that wheel off Icebreaker in the end, Coco?

yeah, could well have been more over, like i said, too many beers ago to remember rightly. it was definately 9 forks on a 750 and they worked for him with the exception of them sitting too high (not high enough to get in the way of the fairing)

and yeah, got the wheel thanks mate :) and the 7 is all back together and going fine for the most part viewtopic.php?f=46&t=17180 it wont be doing any hard riding yet but its a whole lot less depressing in its current state than it was hanging from the roof with no front end

Good to hear... the roof's probably happier about the situation, too.

For anybody interested........
I got the forks today. They bolted on no problems with the only mod being elongating the holes in the mudguard by about 5 mm.
Because the legs now stick up above the top clamp, I decided to mount the clipons above the top clamp aka 9R style. I had asked the seller of the forks to include the longer brake line (from m/cyl to T piece) so it was just a matter of fitting that new line and making up a short extension bracket for the clutch m/cyl. (in hindsight I could have just used a longer piece of line between the clutch reservoir and m/cyl)
Will pick up some more brake fluid tomorrow and bleed up front brakes and take it for a spin and see how it feels 8)

thats good to hear - If you can post up some pictures of the new front-end installed, that would be great. I have a lot of respect for people who are willing to try fitting different bits'n'pieces to different bikes, it can be a big leap of faith - and very fulfilling when it works properly.
