ZX-2R (250c) wont run properly

Postby v8-vh » Sun Apr 22, 2007 1:36 pm

Hey all I got the 250 going again. fuel tank all hooked up (finally started getting parts for it)
My problem is, I can start the thing but it will only stay running while the choke is on.. as soon as you release it, it dies.. or the second I touch the throttle it kills it..
It was blowing a shitload of smoke at first.. still a little bit now... I warmed it up with the choke on and the revs were all over the place.. I did manage to get it to creep up to 8000rpm at one stage but it died straight away.. anyone got any ideas

Hi guys....

I am having the same problem.... anyone knows why this is happening.. this happened after i disconnected the battery for a little while & took fuel tank off and back on.... n then connected it again and I tried using the idle adjustment... but it's not working... since the bike didn't get to idle... the idle adjustment is probably way off now.. as I keep trying to adjust it  .. could this be one of the causes...

Did I do something stupid here.... First I thought it was a kinked fuel line... but i dun think it is as I have checked it... tap works as when tap is set to prime... fuel runs through the filter... no smoke coming out or nefing like that... any suggestions??.. you can PM me if you prefer...

Definitely sounds like a flux capacitor problem.

Haven't got a clue really - Just wanted to get that in before Neka did :D
I got a sweater for my birthday. I realy wanted a moaner or a screamer.

you might have a fuel-tap vacumn line that has come loose ?? This will cause idle problems like you have described ....

what is a flux capacitor?... I dun understand the jargon  .. is that the plastic box sorta on the left rear of the bike where all the wires go to...... how can this be fix??.. can I reset the flux capacitor?..

Gosling... you mean the vacumm line from the carby to the fuel tank???... it will be on the left side of the bike right??... I will take a look on the manual....

it seems like the bike is not getting enough fuel so it won't idle... so maybe I will unhook the fuel line from the tank again and hook it up tighter to be certain.... fingers crossed...

Thx for the helpful replies guys.. I will try n get this done on the weekend... any other ideas??..

There's no such thing as a flux capacitor mate, except in Back to the Future...they're just being mucking around ;)

The vacuum line usually runs from somewhere on the carby to the back of the fuel tap. It takes the vacuum from the inlet manifold and uses it on a diaphragm in the fuel tap to control the flow of fuel to the bowls. This means that if the engine isn't running, there won't be any fuel except what's in the bowls until it is started up, then it gets pulled back and lets fuel flow. The prime position on the tap bypasses it to allow you to fill the bowls if they have been drained.

If there's a problem with how it's been connected or if it's leaking etc. then you won't get enough fuel and the bike will run like shit. If it is OK on prime then it kind of confirms it.

....oh and if the vacuum line isn't connected to anything it lets air into the manifold which will also cause it to run lean and so pretty badly as well...

When I put the tap on prime.. I can see the fuel running through the fuel filter... so I assume it is working.. but I will try to take it off and tighten it.. as it may have a little split or not tight enough and let some air out....

Putting the tap on prime only shows that your tap works on prime, so you can't assume the vacuum line is OK from that.

Yeahh I know... I will try turning it over on prime... but wouldnt the float bowl overflow from running on prime?? especially only from idleing..??..

cheers
