1996 ZX6R - Feela like its pulling back when accelerating

Postby wullieb1 » Wed Mar 03, 2010 3:41 pm

Hey all,

Had the carbs and airbox off the bike the other day so i could put a new rocker cover gasket on and now that its back together it feels like its pulling back when i'm accelerating.

I'm thinking that i've pinched an airhose somewhere when i've put the airbox back on and i need to get it off to check it.

I also blocked off the long hose that comes from carb 1 (left hand carb as your sitting on the bike) as the other one on the other side was blocked.

Anyone have any other ideas or things i should be checking when i have it apart later??

Right stripped it all back out and its started missing.

Are the plug boots meant to separate from the lead???

I don't reckon they are as i've never seen it on a car like that but i'm just starting on bikes.

no mate - plug boots should be attached to the leads.....

You should unblock both of those long hoses, they are breathers and need to be open.

Update for this one.

The plugs caps on these are supposed to screw on according to the Haynes manual.

Screwed them all up earlier and the bike is running fine except for a popping from the exhaust when decelerating.

Aw well more work to do lol.

so you screwed the plug caps into the leads, and then fitted the caps to the plugs ?

the popping from the exhaust is normally from a leak in the exhaust system at the exhaust gasket, sometimes it can be a bit further down at a pipe join. Do ZX6's have the clean-air system ? KLEEN ? This can also create issues with exhaust popping on models it is fitted to...

Hey Gos,

Yep pretty much. Screwed the caps to the leads and pushed them onto the plugs. Working like a champ now.

I think i have a hose on wrong and i think i know which one lol.

I'll get to it tomorrow. Main thing is that its running and running well.

Right guy's 'n gals back again with this.

Bike was running fine then again just started running shit.

It feels like its running on 3 cylinders and sounds like it as well.

Done so far

Changed both coils and leads.
Checked and adjusted valve clearances.
Checked all connections and plugs.

Next steps are

Clean carbs and drain and get new fuel.

Anyone have any other ideas that i can look at while the bike sits in the shed all lonely and un-loved???

BTW to cheer me up i bought a new bike at the weekend. Diversion from the Kwaka as i couldn't get one i liked in my price range.

Stripped the carbs and there seemed, to my eyes anyway, to be a lot of water in the carbs when i poured out the fuel that was left in them.

Cleaned everything that i could remove and its left drying at the moment so hopefully i've got everything right.

Drained the fuel from the tank and i'll get some fresh stuff when i can. I'll use the old stuff in the mower and whipper snipper lol.

Hopefully that'll clear the issues with the mis-firing, if not its onto something else i suppose.

Add some Nulon fuel system treatment to get rid of residual moisture dude.

Adjusted valve slearances??? as in bucket shims??

Have posted this B4 but if anyone finds green death on their lead ends / require replacement leads , new lead may be purchased at at very reasonable rates from yours truly :kuda:

Still trying to work through this misfire i have with the bike.

Last things to change now are the fuel pump and the CDI box. Hopefully there is nothing else.
