ZX7R - I need help to continue racing

Tue Feb 03, 2009 7:47 pm

Hi All

Don't worry I am not after your money.

The Post Classic Racing Assoc has recently changed its rules for the Pre Modern class (formerly New Era). The PCRA rules state that the bike must be available for ‘Sale and Delivery to the general public prior to 31/12/1995’ rather than based on the earliest compliance plate of the model (being 11/95).

I know that there is a lot of ZX7R owners on here and what I need is to find evidence that the ZX7R (P Model) was on showroom floors before 31/12/95. Anybody got a sales docket, owners manual showing pre service dates, insurance slips, aust bike mag articles showing it was here pre 31/12/95 that they help me out with?

**EDIT** after looking at the rules it doesn't state that the bikes needed to be on sale in Australia. Maybe be I am stretching the rules a little bit but I starting to get desperate ;)

Couldn't Kawasaki Australia verify this?

I am trying there as well Andy, but I don't know if they would have kept records for 14 years ago.

Department of transport should have registration details if one was registered before that date but you'd probably need to explain it pretty well as they would have to do a search by the VIN. This would be my first port of call.

Someone like Alistair Maxwell might have records as he would have been one of the first to purchase one as a privateer in the Superbikes....or did he ride for TKA back then ?

cheers

Mark

Alistair's bike was an N, which is regarded by the PCRA as a separate model to the P.

Cheers,
Brian

OK I have been in contact with Murray from Kawasaki and he says if I can pull a VIN from a '95 plated ZX7R then he can pull up some detail on that bike.

I have the VIN of a 12/95 but I know there is a couple of 11/95 plated bikes out there. If you own one of these please PM your VIN.

You could try e-bay..
They have a date first registered area in the description anf you may be able to get info from someone on there.
Heres a 96 model with a 12/95 compliance, unfortunately it was first registered 6th Jan but its that damn close I'm sure there'll be one out there.
Surely it was in the showroom in Dec to be registered that early in Jan.

There was site I linked in the other thread that sold old magazine articles too. There may be something in there..

thats where you go looking Mitch - the rules just state the 'general' public......not the 'Australian' general public. Oz is one of the smallest markets in the world, so we often get the bikes last. You can almost bet your left one, that this model ZX7R was released in the US towards the end of summer in 1995 (ie. available from Aug-Sep onwards).

You may need to get onto someone with a large collection of Cycle Guide / Cycle World, for all of 1995, to get pictures of the bike's release, or sitting in a dealers yard etc.

Good luck mate ! :kuda:

Isn't the N model the 96 ? First of the ZX7-R shape. Isn't that the model we are talking about ?

The N model is the ZX7RR.. 96, 97
P1 to P6 was the zx7r 96 to 2002 - all the same

M was the zxr750r - 93, 94
L1 to L3 was the zxr750 - 93 to 95

I believe Mitch has the P1 or P2..?

N is the 7RR, P model is the road version ZX7R, which is what Mitch is racing. Don't know if it should really make a difference

I have a ZXR750L1 that would like a home that would put it on the track - also have a spare engine, and frame for it + other spares. If anyone is interested.

I have been talking to Murray Sayle from Kawasaki Aust, he has stated that the 1st customer bikes registered for warranty were on 02/01/96. He said if these bikes were sold on that day then they must have been in store ready for sale before then and since the 01/01 is always been a holiday they must have been in store before then (at least 31/12/95).

I will try this angle with the PCRA and see where I end up, but I still have the Kawiforums and Red Monkey sites to fall back on.

Good luck with it Mitch - I think the 'first available to the general public' won't support a bike that was not regoed until January 1996 - even if it was sitting in a warehouse, it wasn't 'available to the general public' until 2/1/96.........(at least in Australia)....

go overseas for your evidence mate, I reckon you'll find the answer in the US mags of the era. My collection of mags does not run to US stuff beyond about 1985, so I am not much help there......even if you have to go to US ebay and buy some mags from there ?? Published evidence is pretty hard for scrutineers to argue with.....
