ZX7R - The 1st Track Day

Wed Oct 10, 2007 8:16 pm

Well what a day. Dead bike and a typical QLD thunderstorm to end the day

It was the 1st day out with the "7" and other than just being ridden around on flat tyres in the back yard, I had not yet ridden it in anger. I sat out the 1st sessions as I was taking care of some work stuff for Champs then got out in the 2nd green session. I was just cruising around making sure everything was working (brakes, gears etc). After a while I was starting to feel a little more confident and starting rolling around a little bit faster. The bikes suspension was all over the place so I came in and reset it to stock factory settings.

I headed out for a few more laps to work on the suspension and was starting to make head way when the motor died and would not refire. Well this is the begining of the end as there is now a nasty rattle from down deep in the motor. :( but I did find out that the bike is really easy to push around :?

I have taking it back to the bike shop where i got it and we shall find out what exactly went wrong and get it fixed hopefully before the WPS race meeting on the 28/10.

Mitch, If you get it up and running again, I have some Carbon/Kevlar WSB Ram Tubes. They might give you a bit more punch for a man your size.
I have just purchased a set from the UK which were the same as Yanagawas so the ones I have (used by Team Bertocchi) would be avaliable.
They may need Airbox mods as they seem a little bigger than stock. Maybe just remove the rubber...I never checked mine on the road bike. At least you know they fit that fairing you've got. Looks good.

Cheers.

Well I have had some good news. the mechs reckon it's just a fuel delivery problem and reckon I was hearing more of the engine due to the lack of noise when it is running???

So I pick up the bike tomorrow and put all the fairings back on during the week and try again for Sunday. Race meetings are typically not a good place/time to try and sort out a new bike though :?

My race report.

Turn 1 of practice was great! Turn 2 the oil light came on and the engine made a deep rattle noise (again). the engine died before I got to Turn 3. Watched the rest of the day from the sidelines.

there are plenty of photos of the day on my mates website marksphotos.com.au/

Finally got around to taking some photos of the engine damage.

At the moment my engine is currently spread across 3 benches in a workshop in Springwood.

well every cloud has a silver lining. The mech is talking about putting in a ZXR750 L crank etc into it. Which means that the engine is 'stroked' out to 793cc. they just need to get a spacer made up and it is a goer. :D

They are just looking into the detail

will stroking it affect the race class you can run it in?

nah the NE class is based on the age of the major componets. As this is from an earlier model it's cool (i think!)
