ZRX CAT

Mon Jan 26, 2015 10:18 pm

I read somewhere that the '01 model ZRX has a hidden CAT like item in the downpipes, which goes a long way to making them more restrictive. Anyone aware of that?

Has anyone seen these headers? They are single walled, internal diameter is 36 mm:

I'm going to take this bike apart, since it uses too much oil. I'm also looking at a 1224cc kit, seeing as it will probably need boring and o/size pistons and rings.

Bill.

Not sure about that. I haven't seen any cats in my 01, but my 08 HAD a cat welded into the end of the headers with three spot welds. Somehow those welds failed and it fell off.

Oh and my 01 goes better than my 08. Might be the de-snorkelled airbox/cams/debaffled stock pipe though.

Strange that, how they fall off. I had the same happen to my ZX12R.

My Rex ('01) goes ok, with debaffled Yoshi bolt-on, but I'm looking for less restrictive headers. Dale Walker does a set, but a bit pricey.

They're really heavy too the stockers. I have thought about 08 or so headers on my 01 because the stainless looks better. Zero maintenance though the 01. Occasional spray with Matte paint. :)

Strangely the 1100 are a lot cheaper

Both will fit your bike but maybe only the 1200 fit your can, For the price difference I'd buy the 1100 and get the can flange made up to suit 1200. Might only be a case of drilling correct holes too

I'm told the inside diameter of the Motad is the same as for the OEM. It just doesn't have that restrictor in it.

Got my hands on a used Akropovic complete system, in pretty good nick!

Akro are arguably the best pipes out there- good work!

I have to thank my offspring for finding that one for me. Japanese auction site.
Next job: new pistons and rings. This thing uses too much oil. May upgrade to a 1224cc kit.

Yes, it will need to be re-bored and Nikasilled. Ape, in the US, have an exchange program for cylinders for the 1224 kits, which would be much cheaper than getting it done here. JE make the pistons, which are 12.5:1 comp.

I so want to do this to mine, too.

I think that the amount of oil I used on my Phillip Island trip was way over the the top, so I don't think it is just rings. But, I can't find oversize pistons from Kawasaki.

And this from APE regarding the 1224cc kit, rebore and replating (their kit comes with pistons, rings, piston pins and clips):

Hello Bill,

The exchange kit is $984.00 USD
I head gasket is $80.31 USD

Shipping by USPS Intl Priority mail I estimate will be around $100.00 USD

We must have your exchange cylinder block in hand along with your
payment before we will ship out our kit.

Regards,
Pat at APE

Did you put other cams in? What about the ignition advancer? Mine is currently +4 degrees. With the increased CR it may have to go back to standard.

I've got a set of Kwick's Yoshi replica cams in mine.

I changed the advancer back to stock as well but I also have a different ignition unit. You'll be better off with the stock timing if you go to higher CR.
