2004 Z1000 Missing??

Postby Rabbitt5000 » Fri Dec 28, 2012 9:02 pm

Howdy, hope you can help me.

I have a 2004 Z1000 in good nick and well maintained. A few weeks ago I took it on the toy run and it ran hotter than normal with the slow going. Later that day (after it had cooled for hours) I washed it. Just started it today and it idled a little odd. Took it round the block and it sounded like it was missing - badly at low revs.

Anyone experienced this before?

I am wondering if water is trapped somewhere??

Appreciate any help anyone can give.

Cheers

Paul

It is possible you have water getting in past a plug, does it eventually clear itself? another possible cause not water related might be if your tank vent is not working properly, easy way to check is to open the filler cap & if it is under pressure that may be the cause but in most cases this will make the bike stop rather than just sound like a miss, have seen this happen on at least two Z1000's of the same year model.

Thanks for your help.

The filler cap was not under pressure but appreciate the tip.

Down low it is missing terribly - like it will cut out - so have not ventured too far. Higher up the rev range it behaves normally.

I am a bit puzzled - but thats not hard to do!

hmm OK - how about the plugs ? Are they in good nick ? Pretty easy to pull these and check them out.

the washing it part is what sounds as a likely culprit. As already mentioned, plugs or water in the plug tubes is the first thing to check, and there are a few people who have had coils crack which will give an intermittent spark on one cylinder. The best thing to do is unplug injectors one at a time to identify if it is just one cylinder or not. If it is just one then you can narrow it down and start checking plugs, electrics, compression, etc... If all cylinders are affected it could be a sensor, something that can alter all cylinders. If it runs fine at high RPM but worse at low RPM it could be a hose off the MAP sensor.
