My latest ZRX mods

Postby bonester » Thu May 10, 2012 11:22 pm

Recent mods to my ZRX:
Hazard light switch- almost a bolt in ER6n switchblock- just have to transfer the little rubbing block in rear half or choke won't stay on.
Headlight switch switchblock- a fair bit of stuffing around to make aussie wiring work with it. Will let you know which wires to cut if interested- you might need to install relays for the headlight for this one, as it bypasses the factory setup- I had relays installed ages ago- best headlight mod too. Lucky I had previously installed the 'city light' in the correct factory wiring position so didn't have to root around with it. Both headlight and park lights work properly on both the headlight switch and key. :D
Disconnected Ktric throttle position sensor- supposed to advance ignition timing down low- haven't ridden since so dunno effect. Supposedly better economy too- my ZRX already does 21km/L on a trip, but usually 18km/L, which is pretty good for a 1200 I reckon.
Centrestand- mostly finished- luvvin it,
Workin on under seat fuel tank. 6L if my maths is right- I reckon it isn't that big. I'd be happy with 4 anyway.
2 X ZRX1200R 4 X ER6N, GT550, 1988 ZX-10, 4 X GPZ250R, 4 X GPZ900R and GPZ750R :) Yeah I like Kawasakis.

A 3L milk fits under seat with bit to spare.

My ZRX as delivered used to get 13km/L- it was shit. regularly hit reserve at 192km for some reason. Goes a lot further now. I got rid of the cat converter in the pipe and got it dyno tuned with a jet kit similar to Ken Wooton's bike. His settings were way off on my bike. Spent the whole day on the dyno- I did all the mech work- got it down to 1.5 hour for remove and refit carbs now. The dyno dude would then give it a run and make suggestions what to do. I guessed the pilots and main jets but was way off on the clip position on the needles. Dyno guy set the pilot screws too, so I dunno what he did there. Removed the foam thingo inside the airbox intake and I picked up 1 horsepower. :) Dynoed at 129.4Hp IIRC.

I bought my 2001 ZRX1200R in Surfers a few weeks ago, filled up the tank with 92 octane (as the previous owner always used 98) and then rode it around Brisbane for a couple hundred kms before I left and rode it back to Canberra. The bike was fine and when I checked the milage on the way home (via Inverell and others) the consumption was 19-20km/L over those 2,000km, swapping over reserve around 240-260km. Over the last fortnight I found that the K&N filter was pretty dirty, plug tubes had 2-3cm of oil, the plugs were old and well worn and the shims were all over the place. I'm just starting to remove the carby's to clean/check/adjust them back to the original specs. No doubt when I've finished the work and check the milage, it'll be worse! Such is life. At least it is a start to learn how to tune it, well and/or better.

That's a bummer. The oil in the plug wells is a gasket issue, apparently it's pretty common. Not sure about the 92 octane though, watch out it doesn't ping. Throw the K and N away and put a stock filter back in. ZRX' s are extremely finicky when it comes to mucking around with air boxes etc. Another little tip when you do the filter make sure you get the air box lid on properly, there's two lugs at the bottom which you need to make sure are in correctly

For massive sources of information get on the ZRXOA site in the US, you'll be able to find pretty much anything out there. Having said that we've got quite a few punters here who know ZRX's well.

Good luck with it, once you get it sorted you'll love it.

Thanks Glen. I've read a lot through the ZRZOA and UK version during the last 6 months or so, once I had decided to find and buy a ZRX. At one stage I thought I was going to buy an 1100, but then found this 1200. Once I've set up the engine, suspension and brakes and ride it for a while, I'll see how it runs. I may check the carburettion on a dyno, before I change anything but I don't know the locals yet as I've always done my own work, which doesn't mean that I knew what I was doing then, or even now! At the moment the only parts that aren't original are the K&N and the front discs, although I've noted your suggestion about the pleated element/filter. Thanks for the advice about the air box lid as I've read about several owners still had problems, even when they thought they had checked it and 'fixed it' a couple of times, and it still wasn't sealed until someone else did. Umm... Pictures, Phil? I'm taking some in my garage tomorrow to record the work. If I have any problems posting some of them here, I'll read the instructions, or ask.
