new guy with ER6N questions...

Postby Stevener6 » Mon Apr 23, 2012 9:24 pm

hey crew im from adelaide and ride a silver ER6n. Ive been riding a while now and recently decided to be sensible and build a house so sold all my bikes and proceeded to go insane so started looking for a cheaper option to keep on two wheels and came across the ER6n and managed to get a great price so took the plunge. Great fun bike, little underpowered but great through the twisties. was a stocker but she now sports a set of renthal bars, bar ends etc etc. will post pics later...

Im looking for someone who has done a sprocket change on the er6, my local dealer said -1 on the front sprocket is all they can do, and cant get a bigger sprocket on the rear. I have heard of -1 +2 change so i poo pooed most of what he said.

now, i would like to find out what -1 on the front will do. i can get the front tyre up in 1st just cracking the accelerator at about 7k but it wont hold it up or as high as i would like. is -1 going to make much difference? or is the -1 +2 the way to go? and if anyone has done either of these mods, what speed does the bike top out???

any info would be awesome.

cheers

Welcome Steve,

If all you aspire to is lofting the front wheel, look here .... viewtopic.php?f=53&t=37072&p=568435&hilit=wheelie#p568435
I've spent over 40 years of my life riding bikes .... the rest of it, I wasted ..
If it's got wheels or tits, it's gonna give you trouble !

Looks like fun but not really what I'm after. I'm not a highway cruiser or commuter so I want to set up the bike for hills riding and yes to hold a few wheelies. Just want to know what to expect from the sprocket change and if it's worth it on a twin?

-1 on the front is the cheapest bang for your buck mod you can do.
If it doesn't work then you have only lost $40 odd

Try the front first, I am sure a search online will find a rear sprocket.

Sprocket change on an er6 will put your speedo out- speedo drive is on front sprocket. Changed chain and sprockets on one of my er6s recently- man was front nut tight.

Does anyone have any idea how much I'd lose on top end speed? The Er tops out around 200kph and it's not like I sit on that speed so I don't mind losing a little. If the -1 is noticeable I'll chuck it on and see how fun it is!! Thanks guys

Does it run out of revs at 200? Or run out of power?

Its not redlined at 200 an thats as fast as it will go, then dropping a tooth will help it.
What it will do is make the revs higher at a given speed

They musta picked up some power since my ER6s were made- they do 185 flat or 210 lying over tank, slightly downhill

I couldn't tell you if it's redlined or powered out at 200. This is info given me from the kawi dealer. The gearing commander does my head in I don't understand it whatsoever!! Was hoping someone had it done and could give figures of top speed loss and bottom power gained. And if it is worth losing power on an already underpowered bike and torquey engine??

Power stays the same, but its efficiency changes.
Just do it, you can always change back.
