Water pump failure on ZRX1200

Postby Errol » Sat Jan 17, 2009 2:16 pm

Anyone else had this happen yet?

Have noticed a small (30mm) puddle of coolant under the Rex @ work early in the week. Coming from the lower water pump area.

Cleaned general are around/under pump. Found the water pump telltale hole @ this time. Started bike & warmed up to about 50'C & sure enough, coolant out the telltale, BUGGER.
Have till wait till monday to ring the local shop for pricing. In the mean time anyone bought one here in OZ? What sort of price?.

On searching in ZRXOA, I have found failures as early as 2000 miles & 10'000 miles. So I am reasonable accepting of 76'000 klm's. Still they were talking in the $150 USD in 2003 for a new pump so it won't be cheap here.

I just replaced the water pump on my ZRX1100 and it cost $356 Aus.
Bike has done 45k.. Easy enough to replace.
If there is no oil coming out with it, then you only need the O rings replaced near the impella.
If oil leaks out aswell then the seal has gone at the crank case and the hole pump needs replacing.

Thanks for the heads up on the o-rings JetPilot :D .
I removed the cover on the pump & it looked like new inside (impeller). That was before I realised there was a telltale hole.
It is definetly only leaking coolant. What you are saying makes sense to me & @ $356 for a pump  , I will try that first.
As far as other models go bonester, there would probably be a good chance with the late GPZ 1100 at least. But I won't risk a s/hand pump failing me when I am 1000k's from home. So I will go new, oneway or another.

Hopefully it's just the O-rings.

leaking from the hole says the seals have failed

the question is can you replace the seals ?
