Somethin Rattling

Sun Mar 01, 2009 10:15 am

I'm just posting this question in the hope someone will try to create this sound on their own bike and let me know if it is normal with some Z1000's. The noise in question has nothing to do with sprockets being loose or the shifter needing re-greasing, chain tension etc etc. So here goes - Do any of you guys with a 2003-2006 Z1000 get a "rattle" if you put the bike in 1st gear, and while it is idling quickly/sharply let out the clutch (almost stalling the bike) then pull the clutch in again before the bike moves forward ?? You have to snap the clutch out quickly and It's not something I go around doing all the time but I noticed the rattle by accident the other day and now it's got me paranoid. I have tried it with one other Z1000 and there was no noise with it. You may have to repeat the above process a couple of times to make it rattle but it is consistantly there on my bike. It is just one quick rattle and I think its just the gearbox/drive train taking up slack but it would be good to know that my bike isn't the only one that does it. Again, it's not a loose chain issue etc, the noise is an internal sound and it does not happen at any other time when riding and changing gears. I would appreciate anyone trying this on their bike and letting me know, thanks in advance.

once i got back into Toowoomba after sitting on about average speed 150km/h for almost 1500km's worth of road. I got started to hear this loud creeking noise everytime i would stop, then take off, just that last little bit of clutch to engage them CREEEEEEEEEK. i was a bit worried too.

but got some decent chain lube and slapped her on and that seemed to fix it. Chain had no lube for 1800k's and is still in good nick! haha :kuda:
But just make sure everything is greased and lubed up! then you should be right.

Z1000 is a hybrid ZX9 and they are pretty much invinsible! As long as you are putting oil in the motor, there ain't really much else inside the motor that can go wrong! You will have wear and tyre, clutch cables, throttle cables all that stuff, but just the basic motor stuff like valves etc and thats all you should ever need to do! Nothing should break and rattle, not with the low km's on yours either!

Thanks anyway Saki, but as I said the noise is internal, and I would just like to know if anyone else can create the same rattle in the same way as I described above ??

If you can wait a couple of weeks I'd be happy to try for you :)

But my zed moves forward with the tiniest clutch release so it prob won't do it :(

Thanks, it sounds like your clutch is adjusted differently to mine. I adjust mine as per the book, with only a few ml of play so there is a fair bit of travel before the clutch engages. And for those about to ask I have tried adjusting the clutch differently.

I have a thought... could be a clutch spring broken or not tensioned right. Clutch basket or plates.
I'm no mechanic but it sounds to me like a clutch problem.
Why don't you have your local bike shop check it out for you.

Without sounding rude, I don't really want any more advice on what the noise could be, I would just like to know if anyone else can mimick the noise on their Z1000 in the way I explained earlier ?? If no one elses bike does this I will start pulling stuff apart, but until I know for sure that it's just my bike that does this, I dont want to go looking for a problem that might not be. Thanks in advance to anyone that will try it for me.

Demonstrate the problem at your local bike shop & see what the mechanics think :)

Yep, all this has been suggested and previously done and the mechanic said dont worry about it ?? Thats fine, but lots of mechanics have said that to me before and been wrong, which is why I want to know if this is specific to my bike ???? It's not that big a deal for a few guys or gals to try this for me is it ???? Or am I asking too much ????

I'll ask ProblemChild to have a go at this with his 2003 Z1000. The gearbox has been tested to all manner of extremes by the previous owner ..... , so if there are going to be any issues, this bike will have them....

stand by mate, it might be a day or 2 before we get back to you.
