reduce the swingarm width, its much easier than modifying the frame. Having said that, some old tube-steel kawasaki frames had a shitload of meat on the inside of the frame at the swingarm pivot point and there is some leeway on these frames to shave a couple of mm off each side without affecting frame integrity. Not sure how much meat there is on the ZX6 frame though ?

Sometimes it will be a combination of both reducing swingarm width and frame mods to get the correct width.......

alright all you engineers. im swapping over the zx6 front end to the gsx. the gsx stem is 10 mm longer. My question is do I swap over the stems- machine off old weld on gsx and press it into zx6 lower clamp or, do I extend the zx6 stem ?( btw is the zx6 stem just a press fit or is it threaded in like some euro bikes?) if I swap over the stems I will need to machine out the top clamp to accommodate the top of the stem as the zx stem reduces in diameter up the top. Can post a pic or two when I get home

done this mod on a few bikes now. Best bet is to grind the weld off the gixxer lower clamp, take out the gixxer stem and press the gixxer stem into the ZX6 lower clamp. You may have to either machine out the lower clamp to suit the gixxer stem (best bet) or reduce the diameter of the stem (not as good) - so that the gixxer stem is a good press-fit into the ZX6 lower. The 6 should be a press-fit, they don't do threaded stems on Jap bikes afaik.

If you use the 6 top clamp then yep, just mod the top hole to suit the diameter of the gixxer stem. You then just use Suzuki OEM upper and lower bearings - and bolt it all in. Its a pretty straightforward mod. :kuda:

thanks gos Machined out the weld yesterday and will press out the zx stem sometime this week. the stems look to be the same diameter. when pressing the stem back in should i also use so loctite red as well or will the press fit suffice?

A good press-fit should be enough, some loctite red could be good insurance but I am not sure if my machinist uses this on my steering head conversions or not ? This is one job that gets farmed out to the specialists ;)

The next one of these conversions I have to do - is a GPz1100 stem into a 2003 Z1000 lower clamp. This is for the throwback streetfighter build (ZX6RR forks, '03 Z1000 clamps, '05 ZX10R swingarm & shock and '03 Z1000 wheels - onto an '84 GPz1100 frame & motor combo. This will be a fun build

I powder-coat all the frames now - have a local company in Queanbeyan who do a great job and know the ins-and-outs of blasting bike frames - they have done a few frames and wheels for me now. They also specialise in pushbike/racebike frames. Really nice people, family business and the old man has a few bikes tucked away around the big shed ;) including a full-dresser GoldWing with every accessory known to mankind fitted to it !

Metal Fabrications up at the top of Silva Ave. Ask for Dean - he is the young bloke running the joint these days. Mick (the old man) spends more time fishing than fabricating

got to love the efficiency of modern i nformation systems and technology. The wreck i bought didnt come with any keys so i rang kawasaki with the vin number- they rang japan and voila a locksmith knocked up two in about ten minutes on his cnc key mill. Now ive got a functional keyset with under seat , tank and ignition.
