GPZ550 82H1 - THUNDERSTRUCK

Postby Slow and wobbly » Sat Sep 17, 2011 5:31 pm

Fresh from Ebay and fresh off the trailer.
Needs.
Battery
Fork seals
Front brake reservoir
Carbs to be cleaned - runs but only just.

$800 well spent - I bloody hope. Will be RWC and Registered in the coming weeks and then the fun really begins.
Rego first then cafe racer style it....I'm in love with them things at the moment. Perhaps a more modern front end from say a ZX6, bigger swinger from a 9. minimalist look but with modern engineering.
It appears from the stories I was told from the seller and from the newer number plate that it was brought up to speed with new parts, paint etc in around 2002. Then it was parked before the current owner / seller picked it up 6 months ago but really had no interest in it because he couldn't get it to run.....He is an ebay / clearance sale junkie. So here it sits with only 60k kms and complete.
RWC and rego then rip it to bits - thats the plan

Oh and have some inspiration.

Will keep the build thread here on KSRC so.
Money down.
Purchase $810 - Ebay
Battery $75 - Supercheap
Fork seals $32 - Pyramid parts on Ebay.....slow to deliver
Clean R Carb $9.95 - Supercheap
VHT paint $19 - Autobarns
Acewell unit to replace dodgey dash $192
Clipons $74

Time spent
30hrs

Few options - this one is LAMS approved.
Get it on the road and flog it to a newbie for a profit.
Get it on the road and use it and the KH125 for shopping trips down the street.
Get it on the road then modify it a "little" bit and then flog it for more coin as Lams approved.
Red plates are not transferable. Need to get it past Vicroads inspection and then so long as it doesn't expire the rego is transferable no matter what happens to it.

nice pick-up mate. Great little bikes the 550's. I would love to find a junker so I could steal the 6-speed and fit it to my 650 !

What the hell is that link tubing on the forks?
Haven't laid a spanner on it yet but was giving it a bit of a tub today and noticed the casting and the link tube between the top of the forks. I dont see any air fitting to be able to put in 2 psi of pressure so why did they try to balance them? Or have I not found the valve yet?
Need a new front MC which ones fit straight on without altering hose lengths?
Geeze its ugly.

Found a US site full of good bits for cafe / Bobber projects http://www.motolanna.com/ .
Good prices and can still get them out of the States for cheaper than a local that is reselling the same items.....Global economy. Get fucked to the locals that want to add far too much to increase their profit. I'm all for Australian small businesses but dont just buy in the same shit that is available worldwide, add 100% to foreign RRP and then piss and moan about having to outlay and stock items when all they do is dropship anyway.
Sumomoto tyre warmers anyone?

I think these models had the stupid air-fork equalising set-up - no air was added, the balance tube was just added so that the pressure in both legs was the same ? Although, a lot of larger kwakka models around this time also had air-forks with the balance tube and a valve for adding air.......I am not 100% sure which style the little geeper had.

Get rid of that old rectangular m/c as soon as you can, boot the fuckin' thing into the bin. These were the worst m/c that Kawasaki ever fitted to a bike. You should use an early CBR600 m/c - look very similiar, same position for the banjo bolt - and work 10 times better.

Ugly is only a state of mind. Rearsets, a long tank and a solo seat can fix all that !!
