1977 z1000 a1 - modifications

Found an anodiser in Mortdale (Sydney) who seemed pretty switched on working with motor parts. Pretty happy with the outcome, price was half what I was expecting

Powder coated the hubs and rebuilt the wheels this week.

Pictures don't do them justice as they look heaps better in the flesh.

Am struggling to get information on the front brakes, those Jap calipers don't fit with the spoked wheels. All the information I have so far are for mag wheels. Have tried Nissin and Tokico radial calipers, Nissin four pots, tokico six pots and they all strike the spokes, might be able to space the rotors out by 5 mm but it will be tight. I know it can be done I have seen the pics !!!

You might have to go for the somewhat shitty single piston type of calipers like I had on my first 'big' bike (CB550F)

There were pretty ordinary brakes - luckily as I built my bike from two scrap bikes, I was able to convert to double front disks - In it's day that was "Wooooo!"

I still have a couple of ideas to play with yet before I settle for original brakes, see how it goes.

I still have the original calipers on mine but with separate braided lines to each caliper combined with drilled discs and for what they are they do the job.

I may have to settle for that but will have got a few things to try yet.

I have tried spacing the discs out by about 3.5 mm each side. This gets the rotors close to the forks but still with suitable clearance. I have sacrificed a set of Nissin 4 pots to the gods of motorcycling. I have taken about 4 mm off the inside of the caliper and they seem to fit ok. I think 4mm is maybe a little too much and think I could get away with just shaving off the pattern

This works ok at the moment but will need to take the same amount off the axle spacer and speedo unit to get it all centred.

What would also be useful is if I can find bigger discs maybe even a 320mm disc would give it that little bit extra. A little bit here and a little bit there all adds up.

Anyway I am just screwing around with this at the moment, why? Coz I can

Fitting bigger calipers to these old front ends has always been a problem due to spoke clearance - there just isn't any ......moving the discs out a bit is a step in the right direction, but every set of 4-piston brakes with pistons on the inside - is generally too wide to suit the old z9/z1000.

I have not been able to source 320mm discs that suit this bolt pattern ?

The old girl is coming along nicely so far, there are a few things still to do but getting close

Once I get the brakes sorted the rest should be pretty straight forward. I will get Mick to do the seat and then happy days.

Hello to all,

It' my first post with KRSC, some of you know me through my 19 year old son Stephen who up until March was racing a zx6 in FX. Broke his pelvis, anyhow I've just decided with the cash I've suddenly got since he hasn't been racing I'll will go towards rebuilding my '77 Rickman. It's been behind the shed for over 20 years and deserves to be put back to what it used to be. So far what I've read has been a great help as I want to pump a bit of hp out of the old 1000a motor. What I want to do is bore it to 1075cc, MTC or Wiseco pistons, upgrade the cam and have the crank balanced along with weight matching the pistons and rods. Had the piston's, rod's and crank done on the boy's zxr400 a few years ago with considerable power gain. The only thing I'm not sure about is the head, whether to upgrade what it's got or change to an 1100 head. Also with what I plan to do should I consider a shim under bucket conversion. I would like to use a gpz1100a1 head but I so far haven't been successful in finding one. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Oh, Stephen after 5 month's is back at work but has to rethink what he can do with racing as he needs to finish his apprenticeship and look after the boss.

I have two 1100 heads sitting on the shelf at the moment. I have not stripped them yet to see how good/bad things are. I intended rebuilding one for my motor sometime in the future when I wanted to play some more. I only need one of them so might be able to help out but wont be able to say more until I get a chance to have a look.

The good news this week is my calipers arrived from the land of the rising sun Just gotta find time to get them fitted up
