I.D. a Z1000 I just bought

This will be a long winded project as it is in line with3 or4other bikes I am foolishly working on. (short attention span)
Hoping you guys can help me get more familiar with Zed restoration. Compatability and sourceing of new parts
for example. the bike has no inner rear guard but there is a z650 one on ebay.
Tail light lense is broken and have been offered an 2nd hand one in average condition for $35 delivered but perhaps new reproduction tail light lense can be sourced for a similar price??
I've been playing with Suzuki GSX1100's for the last 5 or 6 years and noticed how parts have been drying up and getting more expensive over the years but since I bought this Z1000 I've noticed a more reasonable supply of parts on ebay. Is this normal or is it just a fluke?
Anyway I don't really want to do a bare frame rebuild but I know this one needs it. Can't come to terms with that burgandy frame. Very 80's.
I'll probably try to get the engine running like it is and then strip it down.

not many bits from a 650/750 are compatible with the later 1000's mate. But a lot of the earlier 900 and 1000 bits are. The inner rear guard from any 1978/79/80 Z1000 will fit your MkII frame. Best bet with the tail light lens is to buy the best 2nd-hand one you can find. I have not located an aftermarket supplier for these lights yet. You can get a lot of aftermarket bits for these bikes - but not rear lenses

Heaps of bits for old zeddies on ebay, it has been like this for a few years and literally thousands of items get listed every day on US ebay. This is where you find the best bargains. Some of the prices I have seen for aussie Ebay stuff for zeds is just literally insane. eg - a couple of weeks ago, some fucktard listed a pair of black fork leg lowers for a MkII. Nothing special about these not rare not hard to find - just a pair fork leg lowers. He listed them at $600 the pair !!!! no they didn't sell. What a retard. Normal price on something like this would be around $50 the pair.

Getting it up and running first is a good idea - just to make sure its all OK before a strip and re-build. I am a big fan of powdercoating - its a great finish and very durable. For your frame and swingarm a powder coater should be able to blast and coat for around $200. Pretty cheap starting point for a good clean rebuild ..

Man that looks like its going to be a fun rebuild. That exhaust looks FARKING mean! Love it!
Tidy up get it all running and strip it down and powder coat and get the other parts sprayed and reassemble. Then just replace some of the cruddy looking parts as you go. Good luck and have fun!

What do you think about an early GPZ1100 guard for fitment to the Z1000MKII.
the holes spacing is the same but I'm not sure if their triple clamps where wider making a wider guard and whether they were 19" or 18".
I like the look of a steel painted guard like the Z1R.

pretty sure the GPz clamps are a bit wider than the MkII's. Still used 19" wheels on the early GPz's but the front guard is quite 'squared off' compared to the original MkII guards. You could probably adapt a GPz guard to the MkII forks without too much trouble though ?

You can get a new tail light lens from Z1 enterprises . The original mk11 front guard was chrome, but if you are like me , get it going and then do the little stuff. cheers.

igniter coils on r/h end of crank are stock for that motor, as is the rotor on the end of the crank.

My 1980 H model uses the same design rotor/alternator windings as the later J/GPz motors - a large external rotor with a smaller set of windings that are bolted to the inside of the alternator cover and sit inside the rotor....even though externally it looks basically identical to your 1980 MkII motor....

So does that mean I have the correct alternater for a MKII engine or is this the early alternater?
Got me worried when you mentioned different sprockets on different cranks and cams.
I figure Electronic ignition indicates MKII engine. I just hope it's not a mix of the 2.
A mate seached the engine number on another site and thought it came up as a 77 or 78.
I'll check to see if the engine number is different to the number I listed initially.

its the correct alternator for a MkII motor mate. I initially thought that the MkII rotors were the same as my H (1980) - but they are not. The H motor - while externally almost identical to the MkII motor - shares a few more parts with the J/GPz motor than I thought. The valve sizes for example - are the same as the GPz1100. The rotor/alternator is the same as the J and GPz motors. Cam chain and cam specs however - are the same as a MkII.

To really make sure - rip that cam cover off, and count the teeth on the cam sprockets. You want to see 16 not 15 !
