I.D. a Z1000 I just bought

I'm seeing some confusion here.
I see a Z000 MKii but then again it will be interesting to see it in a week's time

That is definitely a MkII motor. The frame also looks to be the later style Z1000 frame. Not sure what the go is with the Z1R sidecovers ? They don't belong on that frame. The engine side-covers may have been changed out for earlier ones, this is not unusual at all....

Unless the cam sprockets have been changed, you normally don't see MkII heads on earlier bottom ends. The early motors run 15 tooth cranks and 30 tooth cam sprockets, MkII motors have 16 tooth cranks and 32 tooth cam sprockets. Although, that engine paint does not look stock to me, looks like it has seen a paint job recently ? Best guess is that you have a MkII and the seller has NFI !

nah I reckon its a MkII for sure and the seller has no idea. Sidecovers are not stock - but neither is the frame paint

I still think its a Z1000 mk11 . It the Z1R mk11 with the KZT00D frame no. The 1980 Z1000mk11 -A4 starts with the frame no KZT00A-043001 .But send more photos.

Its a MkII motor/frame combo either way. Much better all round than the earlier Z1000A1/A2.

Z1000MkII alright - but that alternator cover is not stock for a MkII motor ? It is the early-style cover. They have totally different internals, you can only bolt one of the early style alternator covers on, if the internal rotor has been changed !

Bizarre - but it matches the early-style points cover and clutch cover. MkII clutch covers only have a polished centre section, the outer perimeter is painted black. Wheels/dics rotors look like stock MkII jobbies......but no calipers ?

well there is enough there to build a bike from ....

I would try and re-build that exhaust as well - it looks like an old Premier pipe, these were the ducks guts back in the day, hard to impossible to find these days and they have a really good note. I had one on the Black Pearl for several years, it gave the bike an very distinctive note.......

I picked that exhaust as well. I allways remember back in 1980I only recently got my first bike and a mate had a Z1R MKII with a premier pipe on it. We left another mate's house in Chippendale and when he fired up the Z1R the sound just reverberated in and around all the old terrace houses in the narrow streets you could hardly fit 2 cars in. We were 18 and 19 so of course we arrived late, stayed up most of the night and then left early. the neighbours must have loved it.
Like you said the bike is really rough and I won't know what to do with it til I get it. It might end up against the garage wall with a sheet over it for a while.

Well, it arrived today and it's pretty horrible but that is what I was expecting. Couldn't help hoping it would be better.
I look at it and can't help saying WTF goes through some people's heads????
Z1000MKII was probably my favourite Kawasaki followed closely by Z1000J, Z1R & GPZ1100/750 so I don't want to talk too soon but it will be good to salvage this one.

well looks like most of the important bits are there mate, some cosmetics and a frame clean & spray - it will look as good as new.

If you haven't seen it yet, have a look at the rebuild thread posted by gpz750turbo (Dave) - he picked up a tired old Z1R MkII and did a number on it last year - looks sensational !!
