Cheers mate, the only reason I haven't had a look at the cam sprockets is that the timing advancer is missing, so no easy way to turn the crank ! Might have to wait until I pull the top end off.

And here's the quote from Z-Power in a section relating to the Mk II :

"8 mm exhaust studs were now fitted to the cylinder head which was a small but significant revision. These were much more robust than the previous 6 mm items."

If you pull the plugs, you can turn the crank using the cam sprocket bolts. Just turn slowly, but the crank will turn over fine. I normally use the exhaust cam sprocket bolts if I need to rotate the crank.

The 6mm studs were only used on all the z1 models - z1, z1A and Z1B. Dodgy as ! :lol:

Thanks Gos, sounds like a cunning plan - something worthwhile for me to do on Boxing Day :D

Not a fan of exhaust studs; replaced them on my old ZXR with ti bolts, and did the same for the 10. I see a trend forming ... :oops:

the 8mm bolts on the zeddie heads are pretty tough mate, they can take a pizzling. :kuda:

That is definitely a MkII motor. The frame also looks to be the later style Z1000 frame. Not sure what the go is with the Z1R sidecovers ? They don't belong on that frame. The engine side-covers may have been changed out for earlier ones, this is not unusual at all....

Unless the cam sprockets have been changed, you normally don't see MkII heads on earlier bottom ends. The early motors run 15 tooth cranks and 30 tooth cam sprockets, MkII motors have 16 tooth cranks and 32 tooth cam sprockets. Although, that engine paint does not look stock to me, looks like it has seen a paint job recently ? Best guess is that you have a MkII and the seller has NFI !

Hello, new on here. Really weird but I think I now have this mk2. I bought it off a guy in Sydney in pieces. the alternator cover is wrong and from what I have worked out the mk2 crank has been changed to a normal 1000 crank, smaller taper for rotor. would like to contact the fella that asked original question.

Hi Greenman I have this bike now. I think the mk2 crank has been replaced with older crank as mk2 alternator is different style rotor. To confirm this theory I need to measure a Mk2 crank taper to check size of small end of taper. Enjoying the build.

Hi mate, great to hear it's gone to a good home. I decided to go racing again, and She Who Might Be obeyed declared that I had to sell one bike to buy another, hence I sold it to my mate Paul. He got a few parts for it, and then moved on to other projects.

Look forward to seeing and hearing about your progress as time goes by: pics please !

OK, wiring,,,, got the bike with a new Doremi loom, bought new switches from Webike Japan. None of the plugs match so nothing is plug and play. Tried finding wiring diagrams but they all tell a different story. I am a fitter/ welder by trade and I run my own sawmill so electrics has always been voodoo magic to me. So where do I start? any suggestios appreciated.

If you were located closer I could hep out - wiring harnesses and fixing up wiring is something I do a lot of ;) which Doremi loom did you get? can you post some pics of the switches and the plugs?
