Z1000 Airbox Mod

I have seen a couple of mods for the restricted intake on the Z1000, but this is how I did mine. The photos are with the original filter so it is easier to recognise. I am now using a K&N filter.

1. Take the lid off the airbox.
2. I have used some aluminium strap which is 10mm wide which you can buy from Bunnings. One end is pushed into the airbox lid location slot at the front.
3. I have used aluminium angle and the original screws at the back of the airbox.
4. Make a bend in the strap at the angle end so it will apply pressure when the angle is screwed down.

There you have it a very simple and effective mod, no need for the lid therefore no modifying the original lid, so you can put it back on when you want to sell the bike.

I have been using my bike like this now for about a month with no problems. The only side effect is a loud growl when you crack open the throttle.....mmmmmm sounds sweet.

thats good, but what happens when it rains??

the water will run down the tank and into the paper filter and it will fall apart.

i left the lid on the box, but opened the hole right up.

no problems in the rain

I rode in torrential rain from Jindabyne to Canberra and didnt have a problem. I dont have the stock filter anymore. I put in a K&N.

so u basicly took the air filter cover plate off and used a piece of metal to hold the filter in place??

thus allowing much more air into the box??

no probs with this ??

planning a K&N filter, PC3 very soon..so maybe ill do this before i tune it...

you can certainly hear the induction.... it sounds great, I reckon you can notice a bit of power difference but I wouldnt say it was great. I just put some pipes on on Friday but have not had a chance to ride it yet, should be interesting to see what the difference is, if any.

after reading that thread about my pipes, and how much they change the fuel air mix already, im wondering if dumping more air in will lean it out even more... hmm decisions...

I did it on my tuned Z1k and ended up buying a new lid.
IMHO, this is a rice mod and only makes it louder.
The intake has been tuned from factory to aid in throttle response. My low RPM response was aweful when I did mine.
Many threads have been made about this and everyone contradicts eachother.....

I've got a 03 Zed with a PC3, and had a new set of pipes fitted at the last service.

I had it dyno'd, and Roger (the dyno guy from Motorcycle Weaponry bike shop) found that removing the "snorkel" intake from the top of the airbox was worth 7 more horses, and gave the bike a steeper power curve at the top end of the rev range.

It also has an awesome induction roar when pulling through the revs...
