2006 GPX250R

Postby mattew » Sat Mar 11, 2006 5:55 pm

Gday,
Just bought myself a brand new GPX250R.
They are a very cheap bike, and very good too.
Just wondering if anyone else on this forum owns one and if so what do they think of the little beasts? Also what modifications has anyone done to one?
Ive looked at a couple of websites and none of them list anything for the GPX250.

Accepted wisdom in Australia is that it's really not worth doing mods to the GPX by and large, because in a year or so it's highly likely you might want to move up to a larger engined bike (even if right now you don't think you will) and that money would be better saved for the next bike. That much said, if you insist on mods, have a look at the FAQs on the http://www.ninja250.net website: http://faq.ninja250.org/index.php/Infor ... ifications

If you're over 70kg in weight, one mod you might consider is replacing the standard shock with one from a ZZR250 - because the preload is adjustable on the ZZR shock but set on the GPX shock to suit a lightweight rider.

The other mod that's possibly worth considering is replacing the standard tyres with something like Bridgestone BT45s - apparently the standard rubber is pretty ordinary in quality.

The other mods concerning exhausts, jetting, etc - one of the girls on this site who has a GPX250 (kellz?) did these and ended up converting back to stock spec, because the two or three extra horsepower wasn't worth the trade-off of a less well behaved engine.

'96 Daihatsu Charade TE (my other motorbike)
'91 Alfa 164 3.0 V6 (a.k.a. the money pit)

Matt

I had a ZZR250. Twas a great little bike. The only modifications I made to it, was to turn it into a Ho....Ho....a CBR600, then after a while I modified that into a ZX9R

I've got a '99 model like Lainie ...

Had it since September as my first bike and it has done absolutely everything I've asked of it and more!

It is so reliable. In 7 months it has not fired immediately a total of 3 times. Left it for a minute the first two times and no probs. Worked it out the third time (1/2 choke until it fires, which I don't normally use at all, then no choke and perfect as usual). Read reliable.

I have toured it on a 3 day snowy ride. Just added a little sheepskin solo seat thingy and it was fine. Only just started to get a bit sore at the end of day 3 (and well over 1000km). Guys on bigger bikes were "just taking the freeway home" long before that!

And it goes pretty hard too, especially in the real tight twisties. The only time I can't keep up with whatever is when people start doing bad things at twice the speedlimit and above. Better off not to go there anyway.

No modifications done. My greatest conundrum is whether to keep this wonderful bike I like so much when my restrictions end or to "upgrade" to something that can do power wheelies like everyone else does. The second picture below is not me, but apparently it can be done.
