I have a 85 gpz9 and having problems with the starter clutch.The bike will not start when cold but when going and hot it starts fine.I was reading a post for a 750 turbo and it sounded like the engine oil to be the problem. Not sure what to do.Need help please calling out to gosling 1 .MFP to Gosling 1.

Me old mate Rustee changed the oil,bought new clutch kit and still the same,in the end he bought a new clutch housing even though it looked ok and wammo hasnt had a problem since.

If the bike starts well when hot - why do you think its a starter clutch problem ? If it was the starter clutch, it would be a problem all the time.

What it sounds like to me - and this is pretty common - is your valve clearances have tightened up and you are not getting enough compression when the motor is cold. Do you know how long since the clearances were done ?

I would recommend doing this first. Then - balance the carbs and replace the air filter. Lastly - change the oil & oil filter. You should find that the 9 will start easily after this.

When trying to start the when cold the starter motor just spins.

OK well that is definitely stuffed then. What you need to do is buy a complete starter clutch assembly which has all the pins, springs and rollers, as well as a new hub assembly. You can get these in the US from here Babbits On-line. They are only about $125US excl. postage.

It is a bit of a job to change these as you have to go internal. There are also related issues with the chain-drive assembly to the balance shaft - you may have read about these on that other link ? There is a fix for this as well if you are getting any knocking from down in the balance-shaft area.....

I would still recommend doing the clearances or at least checking them. Screw and locknut adjustment on these motors means it is an easy job to adjust them if needed.

Yeh GPZ89 - Hoges is on the money, its a motor-out job with the 900R. Good link to Sid's site as well, he shows most of the steps very clearly ...you can do the starter-clutch on some other Zeddies by just going up through the sump without taking the motor out, but its a bit of a pain in the arse.....easier on a 900R as described.

was that with a 900R ? I have done it on z650/750 models as these bikes have a real issue with failing starter clutches....

Yep a 750 turbo

aah OK - well they share the same bottom-end as the 650/750 which explains how your mate could do this starter clutch with the motor still in the frame. You only need to pull the sump off - it's still a PITA job but you don't have to split the cases. 900R motor and later variations - gotta split the cases.

Sunday afternoon pulled the engine out.Tuesday night split the cases .I have two manuals both have to be read together but still not complete.
only for the links you put me on to I could get the starter clutch out. not easy first time around.

I still have to put it back together.It is the starter clutch one of the springs and rod is jammed is and the other the spring is broken.
