83 ZX1100A1 head on a 82 GPZ1100B2, can it be done?

Postby jacobb » Sat Jun 09, 2012 7:10 am

Hi Fellas,

Just saw an 83 head come up on ebay and as my head has cooling fins broken off, i was wondering if I could bolt an 83 head on? Do these parts interchange? Should I have any problems?

Was reading an earlier post where Gos mentioned that these heads had more porting work done to them... Do you have any black pearls of wisdom Gos?

Jeez, its the quick or the dead on ebay... I would still would be interested to know whether a zx1100A1 head would bolt onto my B2, and also whether I could use the B2 cams in it?

black pearls of wisdom ! :kuda: I see what you did there ......

Mate these heads bolt straight up no problem. Basically the same head, the 83/84 head had some mods not found on the B2 head but it will bolt onto a B2 motor no worries. Cams are slightly lumpier in a ZX head compared to B2 cams, but you can bolt some B2 cams into a ZX head. This is probably a backward step, as the ZX head runs a static c/r of 10.25:1 and will get better benefit from the ZX cams rather than the B2 cams.

The ZX heads go really quickly because these are the best air-cooled 2V heads for any of the old 1100's. You can also fit these to the earlier Z9/Z1000 motors with some easy mods.

Cheers Gos, It sounds like a good option (and there is one still up on ebay p.s.!) - to be honest, I'm torn between keeping my B2 mostly original or fiddling with it - but as my existing head is still running I think I might wait for a B2 head... but we'll see
