GPX750R '86 what are they worth?

Postby Keitheboy » Mon Jun 04, 2012 5:38 pm

Hello All, New member, first post. I have a '86 GPX 750R which is sadly in need of lots of TLC , was daily rider till back problems so it got put into shed, then migrated to outside shed under tarps and sadly now it and the second '84 model 750 ( think it was a Z before it was butchered) are in the elements. I am trying to clean shed out enough to start to fix her up but not getting far. Just want a general idea of whether you guys think it is worth my time and money or just to sell 'em off for parts and beg the lady to allow me to get a new weekend rider. When i can get my phone camera working properly i will post a couple of photos. She was not in the best nick when i got her 7 year ago, but after a clean up she rode real well, Had always intended to get her back to original condition but financials never allowed, then when back went I could not bring myself to sell 'em.
Ant thoughts and queries welcome.

By the sounds of what you have about $600.00 but hard to say unless we see your photos

Tim is over at the IoM TT races at the moment, but I am sure he would be all over the GPx like a rash if he was here ?

Bear, that's what I was thinking , getting the "goodish" one running again and selling both for about $750, thats $1 a cc lol. but I need to spend a lot of time on her first because she has been sitting . i.e. brakes frozen and all the other little problems from sitting outside. I am honestly pretty bloody disgusted in myself. i have heard that the X is getting pretty rare, any truth? If so I may clean it up roperly if it is worth the big money. Then decide whether to keep it or go to a modern lighter sport tourer. I am likeing the look of some of the retro look bikes lately.

First question...is it a GPX or a GPz?

thats a USA model GPz...and the yanks have completely bike sales years to us
GPz was not available in Oz in 86 but the GeePeeX was

anyhow the original pic of the bike (see above) looks nothing like that US GPz

as the previous owner of an 85 GPx750 for a number of years (and I had a GPz before that)..this is a GPx

and mine for comparison...

:D it's definitely a GPX looking at the duck tail it's missing the lower and side fairing. I picked mine up for $800 in excellent condition but I have seen people trying to sell them for $1500 to $2500 in excellent condition.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

thats about right for one of these. They are not rare as in *collectable* - they are rare as in *not many people bought them new because they were pretty ugly* - and yeh it is definitely a GPX - the US market has all sorts of weird names for their models over there, which can make parts hunting a bit of a lottery at times.

Back in the day, these bikes were up against Gixxer 750's and VF750's. They were dead in the water from the outset. Although I think Rob Phillis did OK racing a GPX750R in one of the race series back then ?
