Comparison 1984 GPZ750r and 1986 GPZ900r

Hi
Hoping you can help with a couple of questions.

I've a GPZ900R that I'm in the process of restoring and have the opportunity to purchase a 1984 GPZ750R to use for parts however I'm unsure what parts are compatible e.g. exhausts,side panels,carbys etc.

Any help very much appreciated.

G'day Guys,

I'd be interested in hearing more about this as I am looking at getting a GPZ750R and would like to know if 900R parts mostly fit it as well.

2 X ZRX1200R 4 X ER6N, GT550, 1988 ZX-10, 4 X GPZ250R, 4 X GPZ900R and GPZ750R :) Yeah I like Kawasakis.

The 1984 GPZ750R you can get for spares is the water-cooled version right ?

If so - you can swap just about anything you like. The 750R used all the same bits, with just a smaller bore and shorter stroke, but all the bodywork, wheels, suspension - even the frame was the same. Dials, bars, switchgear, electrics - all that stuff is compatible with the 9. Smaller carbies than the 9, so you don't want to use those.

Gayblade - any mate of Tone's is a mate of mine ;) - and advice I would give to a mate who is considering getting a GPZ750R is - why ? The model was anything but a success, it had identical weight to the 9, with a lower compression, smaller capacity motor and smaller carbs.....the GPX750R was a way better bike....

Thanks for the welcome mate :)

I think the main reason why I bought the GPZ750R (its the watercooled version) was price and condition. Its low K, and the price was very reasonable. I was hoping there was a high parts compatibility with the 900R, Bonester thought this was so as well, I'm glad you verified it, will make parts less of a concern.

I've bought the bike as a ridey initially, I run a lot of K's commuting to work and need a good solid bike. The power will be ok (92hp is a whole lot more than the 40 I have with the KLR at the moment :) ). Eventually though I'd like to make a bit of a project bike out of it, Bonester and my cousin suggested I slot a 908 motor in it.....

This is my cousins dragbike, its a Jap home market Z750 with a Z1B motor in it (1232cc kit in it). It runs regular 11.2's at Willowbank at 120MPH (or so).

I'd like to do a similar thing with the GPZ, make a project bike out of it, get an old GPZ900R and use it as a donor bike for motor etc, (17" wheels and 4 pot brakes off a later model would be cool too!).

I suppose at the end of the day its my heart that made the decision, the GPZ was king during my formative years, the 750R was available at the right price, plus it will give me something to do with my time....

*sigh* i came so close to buying a gpz900 but got the gpx750 instead. As fun as the gpx was, i still regret not getting the gpz.

well if you got this bike at a good price, and it is in good nick - that is all that really matters I guess ;)

banging in a bigger motor will be dead easy. The A8 model GPZ900R went to 17" wheels, if you can find some of these that would be the easiest conversion to 17's. But it would not be too hard to do a conversion for an entire front-end from a ZXR750 :kuda:
