GPx 600r 86-89. Need engine or parts.

hi, i have just sourced a GPX 600r probably 86-89 (black and grey in colour) for $300 unregistered. I want some advice as this bike has a 20 cents sized hole on the top of the gearbox and the last owner said it just locked up. I have spun the motor over and it still turns but i was wondering if i would be better off to buy a 2nd hand motor and gearbox and drop it in or recon the old one and fix the g/box. I live in WA and have no contacts for parts or spares so any help would be greatful. Its a classic bike and would like to restore it to its former glory. I also need an ign barrel and tank barrel and seat barrel as the previous owner lost the keys. Also a workshop manual. Any help would be great. Cheers.

Welcome to KSRC and good luck with finding your replacement parts.

Whereas I applaud you in your quest to ressurect an old Kawasaki, in my (worthless) opinion (which I admit is worth jack) I think you may be opening yourself up to a money pit. AFAIK that model wasn't anything special and unless you can find the bits cheap and/or are willing to do the legwork finding stuff and the labour/hard yards putting it back together, then you may be severely overcapitalising.

Anyway, having said that I plan on doing much the same thing when my kids have started to fend for themselves, so good on you. A couple of the guys on here have the old GPX750R, some of which look in better condition than they would have rolled out of the factory :). It's good to have some type of hobby where you can get your hands dirty and get to ride the results.

You could try http://www.findapart.com.au for the bits you are missing, though you may also need a bit of ringing around to find what you're after.

Good luck with it, post some pics when you're underway.

G'day antbear, they are common enough second hand, i have a restorer parked behind the Pontiac dilligently waiting for it's turn center stage to be cleared of other projects in NCI (Nanna's cottage Industries). Source a hard cover Manual & I'd use that donk as practice & donor for a 2nd bike.
Just a word of warning ..... The GPX600 retains bugger all of the parts used in the previous model ie. GPZ600.
A final word if i may ..... the end result wont be worth anything on the open market. But they are a reasonable bike for their time. Mine will be a 2up "Sunday Newbie ride" special.
hth.
Cheers Nanna

Thanks people for the posts. I have used your findapart address ratmick and have had several helpful replies. Not too badly priced. Just the freight cost will be high. I will post some pics when its all done but it will be a while. cant rush things.lol. Over here these bikes are rare as hens teeth but seem to be plenty of spares in eastern states. Thanks for all your help peeps.
Cheers

Hi

Just having a flick through some old posts and found this. Did you get a manual. I have a soft copy of ZX600/750 that covers it. If you want a copy send me your email add and I will forward.

Cheers
