GPX Fan Not Working

The radiator fan on my '91 GPX250 is not working. Normally it kicks in when the tempreture gauge is about 2/3 the way to red but I'm assuming the thermostat that sets this off is faulty and as a result, nothing happens. This causes real problems when I'm sitting in traffic and the tempreture gauge reaches the red (after which I usually have to pull over and give it a rest in case I blow a gasket).
I've thought of just rewiring the thing so that the fan starts everytime the engine starts (irrespective of the tempreture), but I've been told by the local Kwaka dealer that although this is a cheap option, it is not a good idea as it will lead to the fan burning out before long and that I will have trouble warming it up in the morning.
Any thoughts or ideas if this is correct or is the Kwaka dealer being too anal in his interpretation of the solution.
I'll need to do something before Summer comes around and the weather really starts getting hot.
Cheers
