1987 GPX 250

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forums and just bought my new bike, a: 1987 GPX 250.

It's working great and I just put 12 months rego on it, But I'm having some issues identifying it properly. I need some new rotors for both front and back, but apparently the 86-87 model bikes are completely different to the 1988-2007 bikes. But for some reason mine looks like a 1988 model.

It's a grey import with 1987 stamped on the Vin plate (6AZGDX250WR......) but it doesn't have any of these things: http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/I_have_a_1986-1987_model._What's_different%3F

The model according to the rego papers is a NRRS93A variant: GPX. Which means nothing to me

Is there an easy way to tell which rotors I need to order? I don't want to order the 87 one's only too find out mine is a 1987 build, '88 model and they won't fit. I can also save a fair bit of $$ if I can get the later more popular ones.

Looks like a bog standard GPX to me. Except for the sticker on the tank as well as the fairing. I could be wrong, but I thought the early ones were them funny looking GPZs like the one on the front of the workshop manual? And the front rotor is on the left side. I also though that grey imports had twin front rotors.
I bought Metal Gear rotors for mine - part numbers 20.008 rear and 20.004 front.

I've just discovered some very early GPX250's were made in 1987 and the older bikes (EX250E) were designated GPZ250.

So it looks like i can order the regular parts .

How much did those metal gear rotors set you back? Do you reckon they'd be alright for a learner bike? (i.e not full racing rotors that take ages to heat up)/

Welcome lorby - and yes, I think you'll find that while it's plated '87 (when it was built) it's actually an '88 model (when it was released).

It was a couple of years ago now, they were about $170 each and came with pads. There might be an old thread with a pic somewhere ...

You should be able to get any parts from the 88 up for your bike, Mine is the same year model and have had no problem fitting anything, and yes the grey imports did come with twin front disc but a few came out like ours!!!
Any problems just ring Kelens in penrith and they can sort you out and if you need wreckers i have fould that liverpool wreckers in emu plains are great for parts.

however im under the belief the imports had twin front brakes and the rear indicator setup was different

as i have a gpxr2 which is import with twin front breaks and different indicator setup and also the standard gpx which has single front brakes and the indicators on the rear mud guard and both are the same year

yeh the indicators are next to the brake but they disconnect them coz they are to close to each other, i was thinking of hooking mine up coz i keep braking the aftermarket ones.

Mine came with aftermarket ones that stuck out. But i didn't like them so i hooked the old ones back up.

Both models were imported - the twin disk models with nice builtin indicators, and the single disk models.
