ZZR1200 Rear Shock

I replaced my rear shock with a somewhat newer ZZR OEM one.
Details here.

Riding and cornering is much nicer now.
I did dial it in a bit differently than the old one.
I put preload at around 4.5 (old one was 3.5), and damping adjustment at 3 (2 on the old one).
I weigh around 100kg.

So far so good.

Mmmm... Is the old one rebuild-able? It is exactly the same size as the 11's all round except for the fork width of the bottom bracket being a few mm narrower on the 1200 unit.

Would you flog it for an inconceivably small amount of cash? If it's rebuild-able then it might be a good "upgrade" with the remote adjustment etc etc?

Dunno. Better bust out a few of my workshop manuals...

I don't know about rebuildable, but have a read of this.

I emailed them, and they said they could do it for around $800.

I was thinking of keeping mine in case I want to do the Ikon thing. I can then send it away while still having a shock on the bike.

Fairy Nuff... Makes sense.

12 unit is pressurised, and the workshop manual doesn't mention rebuilding, not that that means it can't be done.

Might keep a butchers hook out for a cheapie, and have a poke and prod (sometime in the next milennium when I have some free time!)

Brett, how small an amount were you thinking?
I'm considering $50.

Bill.

I went for the Ikon rear shock not too long ago.
I had a few fitting issues.

Fitting......

The top eye is narrower than the OEM one, so Ikon supplied a couple of spacers.
The OEM top bolt does not fit through them. It stops where the threaded bit ends. At that point the bolt has a slightly larger diameter.

I went to my local "Nuts and Bolts" shop, and they had a similar bolt (high tensile) which exactly fits the spacers.

So, that bit solved.

The OEM bolt doesn't fit the bottom fitting either. I drilled the holes out slightly.
The bottom fitting needed attention. It is narrower by a fraction, than the OEM.
The distance has to cater for a fixed width spacer
I bent the ends out slightly, and removed a very small amount of material from around and above the bolt holes. Once attached, the ends pulled together again.
It fits.

I couldn't wait any longer. I went for a ride (it's been over 3 months - shoulder surgery); shoulder actually feels pretty ok.
The new shock feels good, and seems to soak up the bumps better. I adjusted preload a couple of times, and I think I'm close to getting it right.
I initially had the adjuster at 3.5 (had that with the old shock), now back down to 2.0. Damping I have set at #2, and I may drop it down a bit.

New silencers (Black Widows) are excellent, very nice sound. I have left the dbKillers in, but I chopped off the end caps. It is just too loud with them out.
I just can't get over how good this 2002 bike still is!
PR5's all round.
