What is it supposed to do?
Is it important?

Im assuming the good people at Kawasaki knew what they were doing.

It attaches to some sort of blade across the front of the motor

The long piece dropped down onto the hot header pipes and started to melt. frightened shit out of me. Smoke was coming out just as pulled in the driveway at home.

looks like its just a bit of the cosmetic sealing stuff used over the top of the motor ? They put a lot of extraneous bullshit up there, plastic covers for the wiring loom also often have these rubber sealing doo-dads attached to them....

short answer is - the bike will run just fine without this bit of rubbery. My best guess is that it is just a bit of rubber trim that may have been attached to the lower edge of a fairing inner or something like that ?

It's off the piece of plastic from between valve cover and radiator. Keeps hot air from carby area/ top of valve cover. Always a bitch to fit. My ZRXes have them too. Lotsa people have had them fall down onto headers. Incorrect installation I would guess. I'd rectify it. Have a look at millwaysparesonline.com.au/ for view of parts.

Looks like yours was touching a header at some stage...
