Howdy

Anyone out there with a 12 who has done this mod ?? searched the site but could not find any reference.... the US zx12-r site has info, but I would also like to hear if any locals have done this modification when fitting new zorsts and/or cans.....

Its pretty common on the sixes to a point where you can ask the dealer to do it and buy blanking plates off ebay, its suposed to remove the backfiring/popping noises and make them go a bit better.

I havent worried about it as yet cause i couldnt be bothered pulling the tank off but when the time comes to clean the bugs out of the airbox i might have a look at the plumbing while i am in there.

The kawiforums guys seemed to think it was worth 3 to 4 hp on a 6r which is a little bit i supose if you can use it, I am just as inclined to leave it alone at this stage.

Its a pretty easy mod and you don't really need blanking plates. You can just route the hose from one side into the other.
You also have to block the holes into the airbox and carbs..
I don't think it adds much if any HP though.. May improve throttle response and drop a little weight..

thanks Smitty - would be interested to hear what the manual says about removal. Beryl - the 'blanking' plates get many mentions on the US sites, have seen some also in e-bay bike stores. Not sure on any HP increase, the opinions seem evenly divided about this.
Dave - have seen the interconnecting pipe mod on the ZX7R site - carbie & airbox mods page. It seems pretty straightforward, no need for any blanking plates. I am more concerned about the effects on the fuel injection - apparently all earlier 12's use a vacumn device in the KLEEN system, but the '05 12 uses a solenoid that is hooked into the EFI circuitry... I won't be changing or removing anything until I am happy that the mods won't adversely effect anything else. If it means a bit of popping on the overrun, so be it

cheers Yoda a picture is worth a thousand words I am guessing this is the genuine big K manual ? I will have a better idea now of what I am looking at when the time comes to modify the Kleen. One question - what year model is the manual for ? and is this one of those on-line manuals or from the shop ( I guess that is 3 questions, geez I am an inquisitive b@st@rd )

genuine..it is (and a bargain on ebay at $15!)
bidding started at $1 and I got it for $11 plus $4post


this OE Kwaka service manual covers 2002-2004 ZX1200B
says the burb on the back

why have I got a 12R service manual?
yusee....I have a bit of a soft spot for the 12R
and
if I had the $, I would prefer one to a 10R

and i also have genuine Kwaka manuals for a few other models
ZXR750s etc

15 bucks !!!! your killin' me ! I better get cracking on the search buttons......funny story, when I picked up the 12, started to check out 'where the oil goes', ' where the coolant goes' etc etc. The boys in the workshop were real quick to point out ' Dave, this thing is under warranty, you won't be touching any of that for 2 years ....." this is almost incomprehensible to someone who services everything himself I am still struggling with the concept of taking it to another workshop ' for a service '..... my model is B4, from what I can work out I don't think there would be much difference ( apart from what the cycle mags have pointed out in road tests ) between the models in your manual and my scooter.

I do, several times a week..in the Kawasaki area
and in the motor brochures and manuals area

the ZXR750 service manual was about $20 on ebay
and came with a supplement as well..cheap i thought

I buy the Kawasaki ones in preference to Haynes or Clymer
although I did pick up a Haynes one last month
covering the GPX 600 and 750s...for $9! (plus a few $ post)

re the 12R manual
whilst I sorta agree you do not need to know how the diag the EFI system
the stuff in there on suspensions and brakes
would be invaluable I reckon

keep ya eyes open on eBay

cheers Yoda, I check every week or so, hopefully will score a dinkum manual soon ( I try and steer away from the Haynes/Clymer if possible, most of my z900/z1000 manuals are the real McCoy. But any manual is better than none ) Suspension/brakes/electricals etc, these are the main areas I need to look at ( its a bit weird coming from a lifetime of familiarity with the Z family to a brand new scooter )

On the 12 this mod does nothin dont waste ya time. A lot of ppl end up putting em back on as the bike runs better with it

cool, thanks Hammer - I am looking for as many opinions on this mod, before I commit to touching anything. Once the Yosh is fitted, any 'backfire' problems should be very apparent. My experience with burbles, popping etc from the zorts is always from poorly fitted or missing zorst gaskets, shitty-built 4-1's etc etc.

I agree, I have read and re-read many different opinions on forums based in the USA and UK and most do put the thing back on for the sake of stable tuning, I for one do not see any advantage for a small 1-2HP gain (if any) unless you are going full on drag racing with it, i.e. turbo's and serious engine mods. Gotta love those crazy Britts and Yanks for all those mods wanting more power from a 12 sheesh it's not like ya need much more n e way.
