ZZR1100 forks & steering bearings

Sun Mar 16, 2014 1:32 pm

Shit. Changed the oil last night and was surprised to find a fair amount of oil in and on the lower fairings. Was a bit perplexed by it until I grabbed the left fork to move the front wheel...
Suddenly it all fell into place. It WASN'T my imagination that the front brake didn't quite have the bite it had before, and that slight porpoising on bumps in corners was not my imagination.

I guess I've learned two things straight up:

I should've trusted my instincts.
If I'd kept the bike clean I may have noticed it sooner.

So I've decided to do the forks and steering bearings while I'm in there.

Any tips for either of these jobs?

Don't overtighten pinch bolts!!!! Did that on my ZZR1100 and broke the lower fork leg off.... long time ago and it SUCKED, particularly when you do it 100km from home and the bike is your only transport. Had to get a bus back.

Still waiting for some of the parts to arrive from eBayLand, but I have put the bike up on blocks and done a bit of stripping of bits...

Borrowed paddock stand on top of blocks under the swingarm at the back, and jackstands under the cradles. I'm happy with the stability, but will still be careful to not yank on spanners too much.
