Water in fuel tank!!

Postby Matty C » Tue Jul 05, 2011 12:24 pm

I was riding to work the other day and getting down on fuel the bike stutters as I attempt to overtake so I flick it over to reserve then it dies. I pull over, check the fuel, seems to be plenty splashing around but will not start. A mate of mine with a trailer picks me up and we drop it around to the shop, he diagnoses a fuel pump and orders it. When it arrives the next day he takes out the old one puts it on the ground and rusty water comes out!! There was apparently over a litre of water in the bloody tank  all rusty too, must have been there for a while. In the 11 months (16000kms) I've had it I've only used reserve once and that was to see when it would be required. When I flicked it over this time it must have sucked up water instead of fuel...
He flushed tank and carbs with metho several times It seem the drain hole near the filling cap was blocked... Anyway $540 later she's a goer again just need to flush the carb bowls in a little while to make sure she'a all clean.
I'll be checking that drain every time it rains from now on...

Cheers
Matt

 Geeezzzz..... does that mean your fuel cap rubber isn't sealing well against the top of the tank? Or would that happen to any bike where the water drain gets blocked?

possible I spose...

If not yes the seal does not work. The more I think about it 1 litre is many many rings of water around the seal... :? But then again we have been getting an awful lot of rain... and I ride rain hail or shine ...
