ZX9R Fuel Problems

Hi I am new to the forum but have a question,
I have recently bought a 7/2000 Mica ZX9R and have discovered that whilst having the fuel tap to the normal position of "ON" that my reserve is also getting used.
I ran out of fuel the other day and thought it may be my fault but found today when going to the SAASC at Qld Raceway when filling my bike took in 18.2lt's of fuel. The bike only has a capacity of 19lts. And I definitely know the fuel tap was in the "On" position the whole time since the last refill.
So I now think maybe things are on backwards and have now switched to reserve to see if this is the case.
My question is - is there any know faults of this happening or what could be causing this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey welcome to the forum Mica9R.
To me, it sounds as though the fuel the hoses have been installed incorrectly.
I don't think it will be the tap because I have a 6R and with mine the tap can only be installed onto the bike in one position.
See how you go with the tape in the reserve position. If this fixes your problem you have 2 options
1: Swap the fuel hoses around
OR
2:Dont worry about it and just remember how it works
Welcome to the site
Enjoy

Welcome Mica9r, sorry have no idea about the tap problem. I thought there was only one hose off the bottom of the tap & different length Vetical pipes inside the tank ?. Anyway I'm sure the Brains trust in here can assist further. Just as an aside how'd the Kwika-sakis do in the later races i left after the Supersports straight after lunch ... did we better the 5th in the morning race ?.
Cheers Brett

Yeah, something funny going on with the hoses/tap. Not sure how the fuel lines are set up on the ZX9 tho. I'm sure one of the other lads here will be able to help.
The crazy Japanese dudes in the bike factory probably got bored and switched things around for a laugh!
Oh, and welcome!

When I bought my ZZR250, I ran out of fuel and had no reserve.
I pulled the fuel tap out (once I got home) and found that the tube for "on" was not there (so drawing from the same level in the tank as reserve but without the filter

)
When I tried to buy a new one, Kwaka only sell the complete tap unit (over $100) but I found a tube at a wreckers for $5. While I was looking through the fuel taps at the wreckers, I noticed that most of the tubes were actually joined together (my little ZZR has two individual tubes), so maybe you don't have _any_ filters inside your tank...
It's a pretty quick check once you get your tank off and drain the fuel.
Cheers,
Russell.

Hey Guys,
Firstly thanks for the welcome, I have spoken to my Kwaka dealer and may seem to think that it will be the "ON" tube has come out inside the tank and maybe the cause of the problem so it is feeding the whole lot right to the base of the tank, he stated he has seen it on a ZX6R but not a 9R.
The bike is booked in next thursday so fingers crossed this is the problem.
Thanks for all your replies and am glad I have found this place its great.
It would be good if I could find someone who runs basic bike maintenance courses, would save me big bucks down the track.

Good luck with it, make sure you let us know what they find out.
I'm curious to find out what the problem was.. Sounds like someone's had the tanks off, and not connected the fuel lines properly.. prob the previous owner perhaps..

Found the problem
There was no fuel stem!!!!! someone has obviously cleaned out the tank previously and has not put it back in!!! or it is just a general mystery.
More good news if you buy a bike with an aftermarket warranty they are NOT transferrable. They are transferrable if you take it out on a bike and get rid of it and buy another bike it will then transfer to that bike.
So now am up for $81 dollars which I suppose isnt that bad.
