ZX10R throttle cable tight?

Postby The One » Sun Jul 20, 2014 3:24 pm

Hey guys.

Recently purchased a 2006 ZX10R Ninja.. Pulled bike apart to check valve clearances, change plugs, replace stator etc etc.

Bike is now back together but have noticed a problem, the throttle cables go really tight against the frame when full locking the handle bars full lock right? They also make a noise it's hard to describe but it's like a noise of the cables being too tight against the frame and making a screeching noise?

Just wondering if this is normal or if the cables are incorrectly routed? Idle speed does not change when turning full lock..

Thanks guys.

Something is definitely wrong...

The cables shouldn't pull that tight... or make any noises.. there should be enough slop for you to turn the bars fully left and fully right.. to the stop and then you should also be able to operate the throttle.. open it to full throttle and it should snap off easily by itself...

The cables shouldn't get caught or pinch anywhere.. and also check on the cable adjustment... see how much free play (if any) there is...

If you have recently had work done.. for my peace of mind I would be taking the tank and airbox back off again and double check the throttle cable route..

You dont want the throttle to lock on ever.. so check this first for sure..!!! Hope this helps...

Are the cables twisted? That shortens their length slightly

Thanks for the replies guys.

The throttle snaps off very easily, the idle speed does not change when full locking. The only thing I am struggling with is that when I full lock to the right you can feel just a little bit of resistance just before you get to complete full lock, checking the throttle cables you can see that they start to pull so to speak if this makes sense? Was hoping it was normal, but I may have to take it all apart again it would seem?

Cheers guys.

Oh and since I have your guys attention, I recently bought some ZX14 calipers off ebay with brand new pads installed, they got shipped and I recently picked them up, noticed they did not come with the bracket that holds the brake pads 'steady'? Spoke to the guy on ebay I bought them off and he said that he got so used to chucking them out as he was getting brembo pads etc that never came with them? He said that I can just use the calipers and pads without the metal plate and they will be ok as they are just there to eliminate noise and vibration? Is this true? Thanks so much guys.

Oh and as said above I bet you twisted or restricted the throttle cables near the engine and airbox. It is easy to do if your not looking for it ;)

I haven't owned an 06 for a while so take from this what you will. I didn't think the throttle cables were supposed to be routed on the outside of the frame on the left hand side. I was under the impression they came up the middle and out in front of the airbox...

Does that sound like it could be right?

Dude the throttle cables should go under the frame after the front headstem tube. From there they head straight back to the left hand side of the air box where they connect to the throttle body pulleys. At no time were mine exposed to daylight other than up at the throttle tube on the handle bar

Pulled off fuel tank tonight, checked the workshop manual for the correct routing of the cables, seems that my routing is the exact same as the manual states... Gave it abit of tinkering with my fingers and they don't appear to be catching at all anymore? Totally unsure now....
