2007 ZX10R running rough and missing at 8K rpm

Postby oldmanmike » Fri Dec 06, 2013 10:01 am

As the subject says, the gumby is misbehaving.

On opening the throttle ie. accelerating hard ( throttle position < than 70-75% ) when the rpms get to 8000 the engine starts running rough or missing. reduce the throttle position below 50% and it goes again.
After spending a bit of time browsing the various online resources on the subject I'm starting to suspect the fuel pump and or a blocked fuel filter.
Referring to the workshop manual, I learn that the standard test is to measure how much fuel is delivered in the 4 second priming burst when you first turn on the ignition.
According to the manual that should be at least 72ml......do the test, and I'm getting 20ml.... so I proceed to take the pump assembly out of the tank. After removing the pump from the assembly, I find the filter at the bottom of the pump fairly clogged. Clean it as best I could and reassemble into the assembly and refit to the tank. Testing the flow again, I'm now getting 25ml.....so I'm now faced with the fact that the fuel pump is on its way out ( only 35,000 kms...K is not building bikes like they used to, first the stator dies, now this )

Checking the prices...KA over $600 for the complete assembly.....fuck me is it gold plated or something....
Bike Bandit US $324.....still way too much.
Then I find the post on here about using a Walbro car pump, and it started me looking on ebay for that pump. $100-130 + post seemed the norm.
Last ditched attempt at ebay kung fu I type 'ZX10R fuel pump' into the search and lo and behold....US$39.95 + 12.00 postage...that's more wallet friendly, $60au...

Pump should be here in the next 7-10 days, so I'll update the post when its fitted.

Best of luck, Mike. If you get stuck, I have one taken off my '07 after about 5000 km. and if you're looking for an upgrade, change to the 08-10 pump and throttle body hose, for a weight saving of 314g.

Cheers,
Brian

I'd call 35,000 kms out of the genuine article 'not lasting to long' as well.....

If the ebay fuel pump doesn't work & you go back to a OEM fuel pump have a look @ partshark.com .......$252 USD.

Haha I just remember thinking I wished I'd had that cheap option when mine went, then seeing it wasn't a great option after all.

My '10 was idling rough (3 cylinders) and not revving out last track day, stuck it in the shop and got it back all good now ... needed new Spark plugs! mind you it still made 160 on the Dyno before the plugs went in LOL

The beast lives....yeahhh....      toothy10.gif toothy10.gif toothy10.gif toothy10.gif toothy10.gif

8K and the front comes up, just like the old days..... 8) 8)

As for how long it lasts.....................time will tell.....

BTW it was this pump http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/271121969146 ... 1497.l2649 not the "hi flow" model from the other seller that was pointed out in an earlier post
All went together without problems, even the plug is the same, so no need to re-wire the thing.
