Oil

Postby Salty » Mon Feb 04, 2013 6:55 am

I have a 09 6R. I'm in the middle of a service period but have a P.I track day next week and want to change the oil for it. Important to do filter too? What brand 10-40 and is synthetic recommended?
Thanks.

For the sake of a few bucks do the filter as well.
I use oleon oil, I get mine from my mechanic at Dynoverks not sure where you are located but its a good price, in comparison to other brands. I've been running it in my race bike without a problem for years.

Make sure you use the correct torque that your filter recommends. I actually use OEM filters these days, they are cheaper than aftermarket ones.

Oh..... And enjoy PI :-)

Cheers Jonnymac. I'm based in Fitzroy. I was going to pop into peter stevens for the filter - perhaps I could get some marked up oil while I'm there. Would there be anything wrong with getting synthetic oil from supercheap or similar? Also - no problem borrowing a torque wrench, but is that really necessary for changing the oil? Or are the alloy casts that delicate?
eg.

The torque wrench is just for tightening the sump plug and filter to correct specs.
More so the filter from my end. I had done 100 oil changes without but I had an oil filter o-ring blow on me one day maybe due to too tight or loose..... Not quite sure but it covered my rear tyre with oil and sent me down the road so now I just do it correctly.

Don't know about super cheap auto oil. Someone would have more knowledge on it than me.
I just figure you have a 10k bike under you that could throw you down the road for the sake of saving $25 is it worth it.
Stevos oil will be exy, I purchase it in a 10 litre drum so I get it for a good price.
But don't be too surprised to pay $75 for 4 litres.

I use Castrol Power 1 Full Synth from Supercheap but buy up on it when its 20% off as its $65 for 4 litres. However if its your roadie and due for a service most mechanics (not all) will probably use Motul 5100 semi synth. Similar price. Try to stick to the same type of oil.

If its for 1 trackday before a service and the rest has been road riding then Id swap the oil and leave the filter if your worried.

Ive also recently had a k&n filter blow the o-ring which made the last session a little more exciting than normal  I may have overtightened it though

Will be using OEM once my supply is used up!

I'm not too concerned as it is 2k off a service which will get done at dealer. So perhaps I'll leave filter in for convenience.. don't like the sound of oil on back tyre
I'm more interested in correct oil, or knowing what it has in it already. $60-$70 is fine as it's quality I want.

How many k's on it? Most likely Motul 5100. Ask who last serviced it what they use or check the invoice if you still have it :)

Glad to hear it wasn't just me, it sucks as I don't actually know why it happened. Maybe too tight ,maybe too loose ,maybe a manufacturing fault.
Now I just torque it correctly and stick with OEM which funnily enough are cheaper than aftermarket.
My mate had the same brand aftermarket go on him too!!

The oil filter blowout happened to Dave#3 at PI and left a smoking trail down the straight to about T3 although it was a much earlier model.

Id say it was overtightened in my case. Hand tight plus 1/4 turn now :)

The POS left such a mess

I think mine was more likely not tight enough or a fault in the o-ring.
Had done four sessions no probs, then fifth session I had no idea it had let go. Went through turn one at broady and apparently there was a bit of smoke. Hard on the brakes dropping down three gears for crash corner. Obviously loading the engine on each down shift and pouring oil over my rear each time. Turned in and before I had even a chance to think I was on my bum.
My rear tyre looked like it had been dumped in a big drum of oil !!!
Then the bike caught fire !!!!!

I've used Silkolene for years, have semi synth in the roadie & fully synth in the trackie. Never any issues in 130,000 km between these two bike, or the countless miles in uk before that.
